| dc.description.abstract | The present investigation proposed to study and analyze the quality of life, cognitive and functional competences of the institutionalized elderly population and those frequenting daytime activities. On the other hand, there was attention to the influence of other factors in these variables, giving understanding to the moderating role of personality traits and the mediating role of lifestyles, coping strategies and perceived social support. The sample for this study encompasses 210 subjects of both sexes, with an average age of 81,19 years old, frequenting Resting Homes in the institutionalized (52,4%) and daytime activities (47,6%) modalities. Although there is a cognitive decline associated with aging, the elderly in study present moderate cognitive deterioration levels, giving emphasis to the influence of lifestyles, due to the need of an active lifestyle. Functionality-wise, the need for an active lifestyle is clearly reflected and the importance attributed by the elderly to family relations also suggests the importance of perceived social support. The life quality to health relation is low in the elderly in study, revealing the low physical and mental health perception. It is made clear that the physical health is strongly influenced by lifestyles, coping and personality traits. Mental health, on the other hand, is best influenced by active lifestyles and personality traits, namely neuroticism. Incentive to the practice of active lifestyles in all levels, especially concerning activity, socialization and functional coping is considered highly important. | eng |
