Abstract(s)
Like other Portuguese medieval buildings of significant dimensions, Silves Cathedral, which throughout the Middle Ages was the headquarters of the algarvian chapter, was constructed over multiples centuries. The process of building the temple, which aimed to provide the diocese of this province with a church worthy of that authority, was complexified by various misfortunes and testifies to the assimilation of different aesthetics that give the monument the complex appearance that remains to this day. Among the various constructive campaigns, those dating back to the medieval period stand out in this study. The architectural devices and iconographic programs accomplished materialize, in addition to aesthetic, important religious and social precepts of that time. The ambition of this thesis is to formally identify the build system, as well as to decode the iconic language that appears in architectural elements, such as capitals and friezes, and where knowledge of the traditions and symbolisms of the abundant medieval imagery is evidente.
