Abstract(s)
The integration of nature in urban spaces should be seen as an effective measure to mitigate the impact of climate change, particularly felt in the Mediterranean, where phenomena such as water scarcity are increasingly frequent. From an inclusive perspective, Water Sensitive Cities consider the intangible value of water, and improve the resilience of urban spaces by providing water for various uses, including to support ecological assets. However, Water Sensitive Cities need strategies that incorporate ecological solutions alongside traditional engineering solutions, and always focused on people's needs, in development and social inclusion. This study was carried out in the Jardim das Comunidades, in Almancil - Loulé, and integrated several phases with the involvement of Ualg and the Municipality of Loulé. This dissertation proposes to characterize the ecological assets of the Jardim das Comunidades and to document the initial water and energy consumption, calculating its carbon balance. It was observed that the garden space has a positive balance of 16.38 t CO2, concluding that it is possible to increase the carbon sequestration potential. Based on the initial characterization of the garden, strategies were defined and implemented to improve the ecosystem services. Improvements were carried out to optimize the water quality of the lake through a correction of its hydrodynamics, such as the introduction of macrophyte islands and rescue of exotic species.
