Abstract(s)
The business environment is increasingly characterized by volatility and uncertainty, driven by factors such as globalization, technological advancements, periodic economic crises, and other external shocks. In this context, organizations must develop strategic options that ensure optimal adaptation to changes. The significance of diagnostics and clarification of relationships between variables associated with organizational behavior is emphasized throughout the investigation, as these empower companies to pursue a path of sustainable long-term growth while mitigating the adverse impacts that crises may generate. Central to this research is the exploration of the complex relationships between financial indicators such as Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA), financial autonomy, and investment in Research and Development (R&D), in conjunction with product sale activities, provision of services, and both intra-community and extra-community exports. To analyze information related to economic and financial data, innovation, internationalization, and competitiveness, a study encompassing 987 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in central Portugal was conducted for the period from 2006 to 2020. In the context of regional economies, there is scant empirical research on evolution and change, perhaps due to methodological and analytical challenges already identified in Foster's (1991) econometric work regarding the dynamics of evolutionary systems. To overcome some of these difficulties, the COSTATIS methodology (Thioulouse et al., 2011) was employed, a multivariate statistical tool for three-way multiblock data that allows for a comprehensive analysis of the interrelations among various performance indicators and revenue flows in different business sizes over time. The primary results of this investigation reveal greater stability in performance indicators than in revenue sources, underscoring the need for companies to adjust their revenue approaches in alignment with market dynamics. The study also identified critical areas for strategic intervention and outlined actionable frameworks that can be implemented.
