Existem inúmeras evidências de que a prática de atividade física, mais especificamente do surf, pode trazer benefícios significativos para a saúde mental dos indivíduos. Este estudo teve como principal objetivo analisar o contributo da implementação do programa Surf & Therapy na satisfação das necessidades psicológicas básicas (i.e., competência e relacionamento) e na promoção de saúde mental de jovens, através da prática do surf. Participaram neste programa 19 jovens em idade escolar 12 – 19 anos. Analisando os dados obtidos ao longo dos vários momentos do programa verificou-se um contributo positivo da implementação do programa de intervenção Surf & Therapy no que diz respeito ao desenvolvimento de competências socioemocionais, indicando, também, uma satisfação com o suporte social e resultados positivos na sintomatologia depressiva e ansiosa.
There is ample evidence that practicing physical activity, specifically surfing, can bring significant benefits to the mental health of individuals. The main objective of this study was to analyze the contribution of the implementation of the Surf & Therapy program to the satisfaction of basic psychological needs (i.e., competence and relationships) and the promotion o f mental health in young people, through the practice of surfing. Nineteen young people between the ages of 12 and 19 took part in the program. Analysis of the data obtained during the various stages of the program showed a positive contribution from the i mplementation of the Surf & Therapy intervention program about the development of socio emotional skills, also indicating satisfaction with social support and positive results in depressive and anxiety symptoms.
