Abstract(s)
No inverno, a procura diminuiu.
The increasing demand for emergency services presents a challenge in several member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), particularly in Portugal. In the Algarve region, the impact of tourism adds additional pressure on services, making it essential to adapt the management model to variations in demand based on patients and their clinical conditions to prevent overcrowding. Studying seasonal and temporal trends in demand is crucial for optimizing planning and resource management. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the seasonal and temporal trends in demand for an emergency department (ED) in a tourist region. Additionally, it seeks to distinguish these trends among residents, national tourists, and international tourists. Methodology: Retrospective study of emergency episodes at Faro's Multi-purpose Emergency Service (SUP) in 2023. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics with IBM SPSS Statistics Software, version 28.0.1.0. Results: The summer recorded the highest number of emergency episodes at the SUP in Faro. The urgency level of episodes was also higher during this season. In winter, demand decreased, but the rates of hospitalization, referral, and mortality were the highest of the year. Residents showed a constant demand for the SUP. National tourists had a pronounced peak in attendance in august, with more episodes on mondays and between 8 and 12 hours. International tourists visited the SUP more frequently on Saturdays and between 12 and 16 hours. Despite tourists having a higher percentage of high-priority episodes, the rates of hospitalizations, referrals, and mortality were higher for residents. Conclusions: Tourists have a significant impact on the SUP in Faro. In addition to contributing to an increase in episodes, especially in the summer, their clinical situations tend to be of higher urgency compared to the resident population. Therefore, their seasonal and temporal patterns should be considered in the planning and management of this service's resources.
