This
paper
is
an
offshoot
of
fieldwork
done
from
1992
to
1994
in
the
United
States
and
Canada
during
the
preparation
of
a
book,
Greasy
Grimy
Gopher
Guts:
The
Subversive
Folklore
Of
Children,
co-‐written
with
T.K.F.
Weisskopf
and
published
by
August
House
in
1995.
The
majority
of
informants
were
children
between
the
ages
of
five
and
sixteen,
though
adult
contributions
were
also
solicited
to
show
how
the
rhymes
have
altered
over
the
years.
