The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), is one of the world's most destructive fruit pests and it is a serious pest on pomegranate in Algarve. The objective of this study was to evaluate the mass trapping technique of the medfly based on the use of Tephri traps with the triple food attractant Biolure medfly R (ammonium acetate (FFA), putrescine (FFP) and trimethyllamine (FFT)) and with the parapheromone Trimedlure, both combined with an insecticide tablet of dichlorvos (DDVP) on pomegranate. The trials took place in an orchard of the cultivar 'Asseria' occupying an area of 1 ha and located in Tavira (Algarve, Portugal). The trials were conducted in the years 2015 and 2016. The assessment of the mass trapping technique efficacy was based on adult medfly population expressed by weekly recording of adults captures in the traps together with the assessment of fruit damage at harvest. Trials were conducted using a density of 50 traps of each bait per hectare. The results indicated that no significant differences in adults captured and fruit damage percentages between the two tested methods were observed. In conclusion, the population density of medfly on pomegranate increased in October and November due to ripening and harvesting time of fruits, and both attractants tested were equally effective against the medfly on the tested pomegranate cultivar.eng
