| dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study is to examine the communication conveyed by the messages printed on the cylinder of the cork. Every year, millions of bottles of wine are sold sealed with a cork. Its main function is to preserve the wine and maintain its quality. Consumers buy the wine; however, when they open a bottle, they come into contact with the cork. It contains various messages. What do they say, and who are they aimed at? Is there a communication strategy? This is the crux of this research. A qualitative and quantitative analysis is carried out on the items/messages from a sample of 220 corks selected from a collection of 537 units, representative of the national wine-producing regions; an exploratory interview was also conducted with a professional in the cork marketing sector. The results suggest that corks are a communication channel featuring technical elements and effectively conveying identity-based messages (authenticity, connection to the terroir, and regional identity), but one that remains underexplored in consumer-focused communication narratives or references to sustainability. We believe that this is where the greatest potential for communication lies, to be explored in the future. The sample is limited to Portugal; we suggest extending the study to other wine-producing countries, but we have not found any other studies or scientific publications on this topic | eng |
