Abstract(s)
Parenting practices are a determinant of children's quality of life and related to parents' mental health. This study aimed to analyze the relations between abusive parenting practices, parental mental health and perceived child quality of life in a sample of parents from the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The following instruments were used for data collection: the Adult-Adolescence Parenting Inventory, the General Health Questionnaire and the Kidscreen-27. Fifty parents living in Curral das Freiras participated. The results suggest significant relationships between parenting practices and perceived child quality of life. We observed that the higher the level of physical well-being, the lower was the lack of empathy and the inversion of the parent-child role; as it was also possible to verify that the higher was the level of school environment, the higher was the inversion of the parent-child role. The results also suggest that the use of negative parenting practices was higher in parents with a lower level of education and in single-parent families. We can conclude that the use of inappropriate parental educational practices was associated with a lower quality of life in children. Thus, encouraging the use of positive parenting practices may contribute to increase the children's quality of life, acting as a protective factor.
