Abstract(s)
The term sexual coercion is used to refer to multiple strategies used for an end – sexual relations – against the victim's expressed will or consent. These strategies include a variety of sexually abusive behaviors, typically perpetrated through the use of verbal manipulation (continued arguments, false promises, threats to end the relationship or threats of the use of physical force) and/or physical aggression. Aggressive behavior is triggered after a complex assessment process, in which the personal and situational variables interact, which increase or decrease the level of activation necessary to boost this behavior. It is known that personal variables, such as personality, form the individual potential for aggression, directing behavior, but its relationship in explaining sexual coercion needs further studies. The main objective of this study is to contribute to the characterization of the sexual coercion behaviors of Portuguese university students, based on the Big Five and Dark Tetrad model. The study was carried out with 112 university students aged between 18 and 30 years old. For analysis, the IBM SPSS Statistics software and the AMOS software were used. The measured personality seems to have explanatory power with regard to the fact that the individual adopts a perpetuation role or a victimization role. However, the role of individuals is mixed, so both explain the two profiles almost similarly. In the present study, it was possible to observe that the personality traits Neuroticism and Sadism are the ones that most predict the use of violence between intimate partners. On the other hand, Openness to Experience and Kindness are associated with the role of victim.
