Abstract(s)
This study was carried out during the Supervised Teaching Practice (PES) of the 2nd year of the Master's Degree in Pre-School Education at the University of the Algarve. It is a quantitative investigation involving the participation of nineteen children aged between 3 and 6 in a kindergarten setting. The main aim of this research was to characterize the motor skills of the group of children, in order to develop a proposal for pedagogical intervention in the context of pre-school education. To achieve this goal, a Motor Competence Assessment (MCA) test battery was used. This instrument was applied in the school environment to ensure that the children felt comfortable and could demonstrate their skills in a natural way. The MCA covers three main areas of motor skills (stabilization, locomotion and manipulation). The results revealed a need for intervention in the children's motor skills, since some of the competences showed a very low percentage compared to the normative values for the respective age group. Specifically, it was observed that the skills of locomotion and manipulation showed very low results in the age groups investigated. This observation is worrying because, as highlighted by Lubans et al. (2010), the importance of a balanced development of the various motor skills for healthy growth. Based on the results obtained, a specific pedagogical intervention was proposed to address the most lacking skills. This intervention aims not only to improve the motor skills of locomotion and manipulation, but also to promote a more harmonious and balanced motor development. The hope is that these improvements will contribute significantly to the children's general well-being.
