Abstract(s)
This research report entitled "The concept of probabilities studied in conjunction with seed germination in Preschool Education" was developed within the supervised teaching practice of the Master of Preschool Education at the University of Algarve School of Education and Communication. The study took place at an institution in the city of Faro, covering a group of 19 children. The main objective of this work was to promote the development of the concept of probabilities, using didactic strategies that included seed germination. The investigative process took place at the activity room of the participant group of the investigation and integrated four phases, using at each phase, different strategies of pedagogical intervention. The referred phases included moments of awareness rising to the theme, moments of construction of the concept of probabilities, promoted through the participation of children in activities that foster the construction of this concept, and moments of evaluation of the perception of the notion of probabilities. Activities included random selection tasks for bean, pea and lentil seeds, whose probability of being selected for germination was related to the number of seeds present in the initial seed set. The germination of the chosen seeds allowed the observation of the result of the selection process, helping the children to create or confirm the notion of probabilities. At the end of the investigation process, children were asked to apply the concept of probability to a new situation. It was observed that all children were able to perform the tasks given for the investigation process and that 11 children in 19 were able to apply the concept of probabilities to a new situation. The association of seed germination tasks with the calculation of probabilities endowed the mathematical task with color, life and realism, maintaining the result of applying the concept of probabilities observable over time. The investigation process was dynamic, participative and facilitated the development of multiple competences in terms of knowledge of science, communication, autonomy and responsibility.
