Abstract(s)
Cannabis sativa L. is an herbaceous species with a long history use by humans, both recreationally and therapeutically. Cannabinoids are its main compounds, responsible for its pharmacological activity. There are currently cannabis-based medicines and preparations au-thorised and marketed in Portugal, and medical cannabis (MC) is allowed by specific regula-tions for certain therapeutic purposes. The main aim of this cross-sectional study was to analyse the perception and knowledge of MC among current health professionals and future ones. Data was collected between June and July of 2024 using an online questionnaire. Sta-tistical analysis was conducted with Microsoft Excel® and IBM® SPSS® Statistics v29.0. A total of 263 responses were obtained, 247 of which met the inclusion criteria. Most participants were female (76.1%; n=188); with a mean age of 33±11 years (minimum 19 years; maximum 71 years); 45.3% (n=112) had between 25-34 years. 37.7% (n=93) worked in Faro, followed by Coimbra (15.4%; n=38) and Lisbon (14.2%; n=35). 15,8% (n=19) were pharma-cists, followed by nurses (15,4%, n=38), pharmacy technicians (14,3%; n=35) and physicians (8,5%; n=21). 28,4% (n=70) were healthcare students. Most of them had contact with patients (78,9%; n=195). It was found that, despite having a positive opinion of MC and indicating their willing-ness to learn more, healthcare professionals still have limitations in their knowledge, such as the endocannabinoid system, side effects and interactions, due to a lack of specific education. This study highlights the need for more specific training on MC to ensure a more informed and safer clinical practice. In the future, it will be essential to develop continuous education pro-grams and specialized training that address these critical areas and promote a more effective integration of MC into healthcare practice.
