Abstract(s)
The Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC; Dziobek, 2006) has been considered a measure to assess mentalization with strong scientific utility. Previous studies have found good psychometric properties, considering it an ecologically valid measure of social cognition. To our knowledge, in portugal, there is no adaptation of the MASC nor are there any alternative measures to assess the mentalization construct. Therefore, our main objective was to analyze the psychometric properties of the portuguese version of the MASC. For this purpose, we first translated the MASC and assessed its reliability and validity (using the Mentalization Questionnaire; Hausberg et al., 2012) in a sample of 78 portuguese university students without psychiatric and neurological disorders. The mean scores and the indicators of temporal stability obtained were similar to those found in previous studies. Also, a positive correlation was observed, albeit modestly, with the self-report measure of mentalization. Contrary to expectations, the internal consistency of the MASC-PT was not satisfactory (α = .55) and the extracted factor structure was not amenable to clear interpretation. These results raise questions about the validity of this portuguese adaptation that will be discussed in this paper. Further studies should be conducted in order to investigate the internal consistency and factor structure of the measure in other samples of healthy participants and in differential studies with clinical participants.
