Abstract(s)
Given the high number of mental health problems and suicide risk among university students, it is necessary to implement suicide prevention strategies. The literature shows the importance of involving university teachers as gatekeepers in identifying and intervening with students at risk. To this end, it is essential to instruct them with the necessary knowledge to recognize warning signs, risk factors and develop skills that allow them to refer students to the appropriate help resources. The aim of this study was to assess teachers' knowledge of suicide, knowledge of help resources, attitudes towards suicide and gatekeeping skills. The sample included 353 participants from various national universities, 107 of whom were from the University of Algarve, aged between 28 and 74 (M = 50.28, SD = 9.80). All of them answered an online form which assessed the main variables studied. It was observed that knowledge about suicide is moderate, with greater difficulty in identifying risk factors, signs, and symptoms. Most teachers believe that suicide is preventable, but there is a need to improve their understanding of available support resources. Although they show a high likelihood of intervening with at-risk students, their confidence in their abilities is moderate. It is therefore essential to develop programs to promote mental health literacy and suicide prevention with university teachers.
