Abstract(s)
associadas.
Education is a very powerful tool for changing current and future behaviors. Educating for sustainable water management is of utmost importance, especially in areas with water scarcity, such as the Algarve region. This work was carried out in 2021 on Basic School 2,3 João da Rosa, Olhão, and it had as main objective to train young people for the sustainable management of water and for the reduction of plastics use and carbon emissions. For this purpose, expository and interactive actions were carried out with the students using ICT, to calculate their Water Footprint and to inform about flow-reducing devices in the school environment. Actions were prepared on the consumption of tap water, to the detriment of the consumption of bottled water, highlighting the various advantages, namely the reduction of plastics bottles. In order to estimate the carbon balance in the school building, we collected data about energy, gas and water consumption for the school’s functioning and were calculated the related carbon emissions. Vegetal species outside of the building were counted and identified to evaluate their potential for carbon sequestration. This study reveals that the PH of students was about 279 L and that can be saved 270 L/min of water on the taps and 16 L/min in the showers with the implementation of some improvement measures. The carbon balance showed that the functioning of this school is responsible for the emission of 24 t CO2/year. We founded that there are several opportunities for improvement, which allow the normal functioning of the school, consuming less water and energy and reducing the carbon emissions. If young people take good practices from school to the family will promote a transversal change in social behavior, which will globally promote a more efficient use of water and the integration of Nature in urban areas, improving ecosystem services and contributing to decarbonization.
