- A small place, by Jamaica Kincaid: envisioning literary tourism in AntiguaPublication . Baleiro, Rita; Quinteiro, SílviaThis work departs from a reading of the novelistic essay A small place (1988), by Jamaica Kincaid, to analyse the representation of the tourism industry and of tourists in Antigua (the author's birthplace). From there, we present Kincaid's text as ?tourist literature? (Hendrix, 2014), also aiming to contribute to the examination of tourism-centred literary texts. Within the context of literature and tourism studies as well as comparative studies, this paper examines Kincaid's literary text in order to consider the promotion of literary tourism in Antigua. This example is then considered in light of recent contributions from literary tourism, space production, community-based tourism, mass tourism as well as responsible and sustainable tourism. Literary heritage as a resource for the tourism industry could bring tourists and locals closer and conspire to break down barriers between the largely dark-skinned hosts and the white tourists in Antigua.
- Contributes to the profile of the brazilian literary tourist: experience and motivationPublication . Baleiro, Rita; Viegas, Margarida; Faria, DiomiraThis exploratory and quantitative research aims to contribute data on individuals engaging in literary tourism regarding organisation and preparation practices, visited literary places, travel motivations and surprising aspects of the experience. To collect data, an online questionnaire survey was sent to the participants in a literary festival, enquiring about previous literary-inspired visits. The findings indicate that writers’ house museums are the most visited literary tourist attraction and that visitors in an upper-income bracket prepare their literary-inspired visits autonomously by conducting online research and (re)reading the literary texts. In contrast, those in a lower-income bracket often rely on viewing audio-visual adaptations of books. Concerning the motivation to go on literary touring, most respondents indicate the amplification of knowledge about the literary work and the author. In the experience of literary tourism, the analysis of the data reveals there is an emotional and intellectual interaction in which imagination and visualisation intervene to co-create the literary place. These findings are analysed after the concepts of experience, motivation and de-differentiation in tourism studies and the concept of “realisation” borrowed from the transactional theory of meaning formation.
- Dark literary tourism in difficult heritage: Exploring the potential of the Chão Bom Resistance MuseumPublication . Baleiro, Rita; Coelho-Florent, Adriana; Sara Cerqueira Pascoal; Laura Tallone; Marco FurtadoThe chapter departs from the broader concept of dark tourism and the sub-niche of prison tourism to propose a definition of dark literary tourism to bring to light the potential of the Chão Bom Resistance Museum as a dark literary place and discuss the educational and cultural functions of such sites as gateways to past historical events, their characters and literary works.
- A definition of literary literacy: a content analysis of literature syllabuses and interviews with Portuguese lecturers of literaturePublication . Baleiro, RitaThe aim of this paper is to present a definition of literary literacy in the context of majors in languages, literatures and cultures, in Portugal. A definition of literary literacy was deduced from a content analysis of primary data sources and from the theoretical underpinnings of the transactional theory of reading. The primary data sources are fourteen Portuguese and English literature syllabuses from four Portuguese universities (Lisboa, Nova, Coimbra and Porto) and twelve interviews with Portuguese university lecturers of literature. Based on the findings of a content analysis of both syllabuses and interviews, from the lecturers‘ point of view, a literary literate student doing a major in languages, literatures and cultures must, above all, be able to contextualize literary texts and their authors both historically and culturally, must be able to present an interpretation as a coherent text, and must be able to do and organize bibliographical research.
- Health-related quality of life in patients with Rheumatoid ArthritisPublication . Ferreira, Lara; Ferreira, Pedro Lopes; Baleiro, RitaObjectives: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic rheumatic disease of unknown aetiology and greater incidence among the elderly. It can lead to serious consequences regarding functional limitations and patient's ability to work. The purpose of this study was to assess the health-related quality of life in patients with RA. Methods: Portuguese version of SF-6D and Portuguese translations of EQ-5D and AIMS2-SF were self-administered in a postal survey to a representative sample of the Portuguese population with RA. Data concerning the patients' characteristics and the stage of the disease were also collected. Results: The majority of the patients presented minor problems in some of the instruments' dimensions. In a scale from 0.30 to 1.00, the average utility score was 0.77. The lowest utility scores were reported by women, those who were divorced or separated, individuals with lower educational levels, who had lower incomes, were recently diagnosed and those who were not taking new biological therapies. Apart from these, patients who had a more severe RA and co-morbidity also report lower utility scores. Conclusions: The preference-based utility measures used in this study adequately discriminate across different RA severity and socio-demographic background. Assuming that these values represent the patients' preferences and the utility associated with their health state, the results presented in this paper may be used as an approximation to normative values for the SF-6D in economic evaluation studies as well as in clinical studies.
- I have my eyes fixed ahead : A contribution to the African literary landscapePublication . Baleiro, Rita; Coelho-Florent, AdrianaThis exploratory and conceptual paper aims to demonstrate the relevance of literary heritage to enhance the tourist experience and development of the Chão Bom Resistance Museum in Tarrafal (Cape Verde). This study contributes to the construction of the African literary landscape and lls the gap in the research on literary tourism in African destinations. Methodologically, the paper analyses primary and secondary data to identify literary texts and authors associated with the site that can help shape the site's literary landscape and suggest literary tourism products and experiences be implemented at the museum. The study is grounded in literary tourism studies, in the notion that literature can play a signi cant testimonial and enhancing role in tourism. It reviews the literature on literary tourism in African destinations. The main ndings point towards a substantive gap in the literature concerning literary tourism in African countries and a need for cultural promotion of literary tourist destinations aimed at both literary and non-literary tourists
- International mobiliy of a community of students from the Universidade do AlgarvePublication . Arraes Viegas, Margarida; Baleiro, RitaThis study compiles data on the mobility of a group of Portuguese public higher education students. It aims to understand how these young people are seeing their professional future and the hypothesis of international labour and academic mobility in a period of economic and social crisis. Based on data from a survey applied to 425 students of the Universidade do Algarve in 2016, their predisposition for mobility is analysed according to their professional perspectives, demographic characteristics and language skills. The results show that most of the respondents (69.6%) consider the possibility of working abroad and that this intention is motivated by the disbelief of reaching, in Portugal, work that provides stability and security, good remuneration conditions and social prestige. The possibility of an international academic experience, considered by 60.7% of the students, is not associated with the benevolent selfassessment of language skills. However, in the case of labour mobility, it was seen that this predisposition is greater amongst those who express greater confidence in their English skills.

- A Place where texts brew: the foreign writers who shaped the Algarve tourist and literary landscapePublication . Baleiro, Rita; Baleiro, Rita; Arcos-Pumarola, JordiThis chapter examines foreign writers’ escape or holiday travel events to the Algarve (Portugal) between the 1950s and the 2010s to reflect on their experience of this destination. The authors’ biography and bibliography were analysed concerning connections to this southern European territory. The findings suggest that the presence of these writers creates literary places and adds literary meaning to the Algarvian landscape.
