- Activating an artisanal saltpan: tourism crowding in or waterbirds crowding out?Publication . Ramos, Jorge; Pinto, Patrícia; Pintassilgo, Pedro; Resende, Anabela; Cancela da Fonseca, LuísPurpose There is an increasing interest in visiting protected areas in the Algarve (Portugal). Tourists are interested in contact with nature activities. However, protected areas are quite sensitive to human pressure and are limited in their carrying capacity. The purpose of this study is to fill a literature gap concerning which features attract tourists who visit saltpans via a pedestrian tour and what sort of pressure they inflict on waterbirds' behaviour. Design/methodology/approach The tour consists of a predefined path with interpretive boards and guides who provide explanations to visitors. This study is threefold: to find out if waterbirds are disturbed by the presence of tourists, if tourists prefer to learn more about saltpans instead of finding waterbirds and if tourists have any preferred waterbird species. The methods used are direct observations with binoculars of the saltpan area and a short questionnaire. With the data collected, three hypotheses are tested. Findings The results show that the occurrence of waterbirds does not vary according to the presence or absence of tourist visits, tourists prefer visiting saltpans rather than watching waterbirds and there is some waterbird species preference. Practical implications Few people can visit the saltpan while keeping disturbance of both waterbirds and workers to a minimum. This study gives insights into sustainable ecotourism practices and how to articulate them with saltpan works. Originality/value The value of this study can be demonstrated by the interconnection between traditional salt production, waterbirds' habitat, visitors' interest and their interaction.
- Allgarve events: Implications for the Algarve imagePublication . Manuela Guerreiro, Maria; Pinto, Patrícia; Mendes, JúlioLocated in the south of Portugal, the Algarve belongs to the top twenty travel destinations worldwide, with a local economy relying strongly on tourism-related activities. The Allgarve programme was launched in 2007 and is an umbrella brand that aims to reposition the Algarve as a refi ned tourism destination with glamour. Allgarve is a set of cultural, artistic and sports events off ered mainly during the summer season. Based on data from a questionnaire carried out with 282 foreign tourists who visited the Algarve, this study identifi es and profi les clusters of tourists based on their perceptions of Allgarve. In addition, we analyse to what extent the image of the Algarve has changed as a consequence of the Allgarve events. The results show that most respondents agree with the Allgarve brand name, report a positive perception of the campaign, and agree that it has a positive impact for the Algarve differentiation. However, the results suggest that the majority of tourists still come to the region attracted by the Algarve brand, and that this brand has not been aff ected by the Allgarve programme's content. Th e fi ndings of this study are important in understanding the implications of events in repositioning strategies of mature tourism destinations.

- Birdwatcher profile in the Ria Formosa Natural ParkPublication . Costa, Andreia; Pintassilgo, Pedro; Matias, António; Pinto, Patrícia; Guimarães, Maria HelenaIn the Algarve the potential for birdwatching tourism is widely recognized, especially in the Ria Formosa Natural Park (RFNP). This study aims to describe birdwatchers' profile in the RFNP. For this purpose, a survey was applied. The results show that the most frequent nationalities of birdwatchers are: British (39%), Dutch (17%) and Portuguese (17%). The majority of birdwatchers are male (55%) and married (57%). The average age is 50 years old. They are highly educated (74% have an academic degree). Concerning profession, the most frequent answer was retired (41%). Respondents are committed to the activity as the majority possess special equipment and practice birdwatching in vacations. This study also tests if nationality is related to other characteristics of the birdwatchers, by using the Kruskal-Wallis and the Chi-square tests. Overall, the results of this study highlight that regional management organizations should invest in developing birdwatching in the RFNP.
- Building bridges between residents and tourism: attitudinal support, emotional solidarity, and intentions for pro-tourism behavioursPublication . Lança, Milene; Nobre Pereira, Luis; Renda, Ana Isabel; Marques, João Filipe; Ramos, Celia; Martins Guerreiro, Maria Manuela; Hio Kuan Lai; Pinto, PatríciaThis study explores the relationships between residents' attitudes in support of tourism, emotional solidarity with tourists and willingness to engage in pro-tourism behaviours. Residents' support for tourism hinges on their perceived benefits and costs, as influenced by theories such as the Social Exchange Theory and the Theory of Reasoned Action. Despite extensive research on residents' attitudes and tourism support, pro-tourism behaviours remain underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating how residents' attitudes and emotional solidarity, including newly added indicators of interpersonal connection, impact their intentions for pro-tourism behaviours. Empirical data from a sample of 4,026 residents in the Algarve region, Portugal, were analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results of this study not only offer theoretical insights but also have practical implications for destination management. These findings underscore the importance of implementing internal marketing strategies that foster a welcoming and empathetic attitude among residents towards tourists. The study's results become directly relevant and beneficial to tourism by fostering a sense of connection and appreciation for tourists among residents.
- Callose synthase and xyloglucan endotransglucosylase gene expression over time in Citrus × clementina and Citrus × sinensis infected with citrus tristeza virusPublication . da Silva, Melina; Germano, Sandra; Duarte, Amilcar; Pinto, Patrícia; Marques, NatáliaCitrus tristeza virus (CTV) is a virus that already caused great losses in citrus producing regions. The cell wall of plant cells plays an important role in the defence response to viruses. Following several studies indicating that cell wall enzyme transcripts of callose synthase 7 (calS7) and xyloglucan endotransglucosylase 9 (xth9) are modified during a viral infection, transcript expression of calS7 isoform x5 (calS7x5) and xth9 was evaluated over time in Citrus x sinensis 'Valencia Late' (VL) and Citrus x clementina 'Fina' (CL), infected with the severe CTV isolate T318A, by quantitative (q) PCR. qPCR analysis of healthy and CTV infected citrus was performed at 15 days, 10 months and at 31 months post-inoculation (dpi/mpi), respectively. The CTV titer, evaluated at the three time-points by qPCR, increased over time in bark tissues, with VL plants exhibiting a titer about 5 times higher than CL 31 mpi. CTV infection did not cause significant changes in calS7x5 gene expression over time in both citrus cultivars. However, CTV infection was associated with significant up-regulation of xth9 in VL compared to controls 31 mpi. This study highlights that CTV infection can affect the expression of specific cell wall-associated genes over time and that this influence was distinct for VL and CL. This study provides further insight into the CTV-citrus host interaction, with the long-term response of VL to a severe CTV isolate involving a high expression of the xth9 gene.
- Causes and effects of wine tourism development in wineries: the perspective of institutional theoryPublication . Lavandoski, Joice; Pinto, Patrícia; Silva, João; Vargas-Sanchez, AlfonsoPurpose - This study aims to propose that the institutional environment exerts pressure on the behavior of wineries toward wine tourism development (WTD) and the effect of this influence confers legitimacy to the business of wine tourism.Design/methodology/approach - Structural equation modeling through partial least squares was applied to estimate and validate a model using data from a quantitative survey in the universe of 62 wineries with a wine tourism component along the Alentejo Wine Route in Portugal. The proposed model is based on institutional theory through an inter-organizational perspective of wineries.Findings - The results show that WTD coexists with a highly institutionalized environment, exerting distinctive mechanisms of external pressure together with the search for social legitimacy through actions and practices on the part of the involved wineries. However, the relationship between legitimacy and organizational performance in wineries with wine tourism is not validated.Research limitations/implications - The specific sample of the Alentejo wine companies does not allow the results to be generalized. Future studies should replicate the proposed research model using other geographic areas.Practical implications - The results are particularly interesting for managers of wineries and should be considered in the decision-making and strategic processes regarding wine tourism.Originality/value - The use of institutional theory in the wine tourism context is novel and original. This study fills a research gap by conducting an empirical investigation of wine tourism based on institutional theory, which allows the identification of exogenous factors that can influence and impose restrictions on the organizational behavior of winery companies toward wine tourism.
- The contribution of tourism experiences to eudaimonic well-being: insight from Generation ZPublication . Bagheri, Fatemeh; Martins Guerreiro, Maria Manuela; Pinto, Patrícia; Ghaderi, ZahedDespite the growing interest in exploring the tourism experiences of Generation Z and their significant influence on the tourism industry, there is a dearth of investigation into the eudaimonic consequences of tourism among this cohort. Eudaimonic well-being refers to understanding yourself, having a meaningful life, and actively pursuing excellence. Drawing on the psychological well-being approach, this study explores how Generation Z describes the long-term eudaimonic effects of tourism experiences in their lifetime. The qualitative findings reveal seven key themes that elucidate the eudaimonic dimensions of travel experiences among Generation Z, categorised into three more general and interconnected groups: individual characteristics, interpersonal experiences, and societal influences. The seven central themes include authentic self-development, mastery of challenges, interpersonal bonds, spirituality and mindfulness, future professional advancement, conscientiousness, and hedonic happiness. This study advances existing eudaimonic well-being frameworks and contributes to 'tourism and well-being'. Additionally, implications for tourism academics and practitioners are provided.
- Coping and social support as moderators: relationship between financial threat and negative psychological outcomesPublication . Viseu, João; Jesus, Saúl; Leal, Ana Rita Cavaco; Pinto, Patrícia; Nunes, Lara Ayala; Matavelli, RafaelaBetween 2011 and 2014 Portugal faced an economic crisis. During a crisis, individuals develop threat perceptions regarding their financial situation. When individuals perceive that their financial situation worsens, negative psychological outcomes emerge. The present study assessed the relationship between financial threat and three negative psychological outcomes (stress, anxiety, and depression), and tested the moderating role of proactive coping and social support, individually and combined, on this relationship. The moderating role of sociodemographic variables (age, gender, marital status, and professional situation) was also considered. A sample of 729 participants, 33.9% males and 66.1% females, was collected online between March–June 2013. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the obtained data. Financial threat was positively and significantly associated with stress, anxiety, and depression. Proactive coping moderated the relationship between financial threat and depression. Social support, individually and combined with proactive coping, did not moderate the relationship between financial threat and any of the negative psychological outcomes. Age moderated the relationship between financial threat and stress. The main implications of this study are presented, as well as its limitations and suggestions for future works.
