São José, JoséWith the aim of gauging the state of knowledge on the care of children and older people in Portugal, we have carried out as extensive a survey as possible of bibliographical references. An analysis of the data we have collected provides a number of main features, and these are described in the following paragraphs.
- Folklore and literature. Studies in the portuguese, brazilian, sephardic, and hispanic oral traditionsPublication . Snow, Joseph T.Folklore and Literature is a collection of entertaining yet scholarly writing with something for every student of oral Romance literatures. Its author is well - known for his extensive work in the Hispano - Portuguese ballad tradition and his cycle of studies on many other medieval and early modern works of popular poetry and prose ( Celestina, Lozana andaluza ). His expertise, accumulated over long years of direct contact with folk song and folkways, is on ample display in this ambitiously sub titled collection of eight studies, complete with appendices of full texts that were only partially referred to in the studies, useful end notes, almost thirty pages of works cited – a sign of the extensive preparation that informs this collection – and, fin ally, three indexes: [1] Ballads, Popular Songs, and Folktales; [2] Euphemisms and Metaphors (a specialty of the author); and [3] Subjects and Proper Names.
- Detection and localization of osteocalcin (BGP or Bone Gla Protein) in teleosts by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistryPublication . Gavaia, Paulo J.; Viegas, C. A.; Pinto, Jorge; Sarasquete, C.; Cancela, LeonorAlthough the presence of osteocalcin (BGP) has been known for a number years, little knowledge on the regulation of expression and tissue localization of this protein in lower vertebrate organisms. In this site we have investigated the site of BGP mRNA expression by in situ hybridization using radiolabeled riboprobes and the tissue localization of the mature protein by immunohistochemistry in the Senegal sole (Solea senegalensis), zebrafish (Danio rerio), and gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) using fish BGP polyclonal antibodies.
- Electrical AC behaviour of MPCVD diamond Schottky diodesPublication . Pereira, L.; Rodrigues, A.; Gomes, Henrique L.; Pereira, E.The present work reports some experimental results on the electrical AC behaviour of metal-undoped diamond Schottky diodes fabricated with a free-standing MPCVD diamond film (5 mum thick). The metals are gold for the ohmic contact and aluminium for the rectifier. The capacitance and loss tangent vs, frequency shows that capacitance presents a relaxation maximum at frequencies near 10 kHz at room temperature. Although the simple model (small equivalent circuit) can justify the values for the relaxation, it cannot justify the departure from the Debye model, also verified in the Cole-Cole plot. Taking into account the existence of traps in the depletion region, a best fit to the experimental results was obtained. The difference between the Fermi level and the band edge of 0.2-0.3 eV is in agreement with the activation energy found from the loss tangent analysis. The capacitance with applied voltage (Mott-Schottky plots) gives a defect density of 10(16) cm(-3) with contact potentials near 0.5 V and the profile of defect density obtained shows a major density (approx. 10(17) cm(-3)) in a layer with a thickness less than 50 nm from the junction, decreasing by one order of magnitude with increasing distance. Finally a structural model is proposed to explain the AC behaviour found. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
- Cloning, characterisation and tissue distribution of an aquaporin-3 cDNA from fish (Sparus aurata)Publication . Santos, CRA; Fuentes, Juan; Cardoso, João CR; Estêvão, Dulce; Power, DeborahThe major intrinsic protein (MIP) family consists of several transmembrane channel proteins specific for water and neutral solutes. All proteins belonging to the MIP family evolved from two divergent bacterial paralogues, one giving rise to the CHIP group, functionally characterised as water channels and the other to the GLP group, specialised in glycerol transport. Three forms of MIP proteins belonging to the GLP group have been identified in mammals: aquaporin-3 (AQP-3), aquaporin-7 (AQP-7) and aquaporin-9 (AQP-9). We have recently cloned and characterised a GLP cDNA from the marine teleost sea bream (Sparus aurata) and studied its tissue distribution. Phylogenetic analysis revealed it was most like AQP-3 and further studies are now underway to determine its role in hydromineral balance.
- Single and multi-objective genetic programming design for B-spline neural networks and neuro-fuzzy systemsPublication . Cabrita, Cristiano Lourenço; Ruano, Antonio; Fonseca, C. M.The design phase of B-spline neural networks and neuro-fuzzy systems is a highly computationally complex task. Existent heuristics, namely the ASMOD algorithm, have been found to be highly dependent on the initial conditions employed. A Genetic Programming approach is proposed, which produces an efficient topology search, obtaining additionally more consistent solutions. The facility to incorporate a multi-objective approach to the GP algorithm is exploited, enabling the designer to obtain better conditioned models, and more adequate for their intended use.
- Osteologic development of the viscerocranial skeleton in sea bream A lternative ossification strategies in teleost fishPublication . Faustino, M.; Power, DeborahThe ontogeny of the viscerocranial skeleton of sea bream Sparus aurata larvae was studied from 1 to 90 days post-hatching. In the smallest specimens analysed at 2·7 mm LN no cephalic elements were present and at 3·1 mm LN the following cartilaginous structures were visible: trabecula cranii, auditory capsule, Meckel’s cartilage, quadrate, hyosymplectic cartilage, sclerotic, hypohyal, ceratohyal epihyal cartilage, interhyal, hypobranchial 1 and ceratobranchial 1. The only structure ossified at this size is the maxillary and the next ossified structures to appear are the preopercle and opercle at about 3·7 mm LN. The last bones to appear are infraorbital 2 and 6 at 15·1 mm LS. The first cartilaginous elements and structures to ossify in S. aurata appear to be related with functional requirements, so that structures involved directly in feeding and breathing generally appear and ossify before those that are not. The ontogeny of different regional structures revealed that generally the dermal bones ossify before the cartilage replacement bones. Comparison of S. aurata viscerocranial skeleton ontogeny with that of phylogenetically distant fish demonstrates that different ossification strategies exist in higher and lower teleost fish.

- Genetic homogeneity in the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa at its northern Atlantic limit revealed through RAPDPublication . Alberto, Filipe; Mata, Leonardo; Santos, RuiRandom amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to analyse the genetic variability of the dioecious seagrass Cymodocea nodosa Ucria (Ascherson) in the Ria Formosa lagoon, Portugal, the species' northern limit in the Atlantic. Three individuals from each of 6 meadows were genotyped with 28 primers. Meadows described previously as having flower marks were compared with meadows where flowers did not occur. A single polymorphic band, specific for one meadow, was observed in a total of 177 fragments. The lack of genetic variability among meadows both with and without flower indicates that flower production is not associated with a higher level of genetic variation. The genetic homogeneity of C, nodosa in the Ria Formosa suggests a founder effect, produced by a single or a limited number of migrants composing the colonising gene pool, This hypothesis is supported by the geographic isolation from other populations as the nearest populations lie more than 300 km away from the Ria Formosa. The lack of reproductive success of C, nodosa in Ria Formosa natural park and its low genetic variability are important factors in the conservation of this species since recolonisation can only occur through vegetative growth.

- Cloning, characterization, and tissue distribution of prolactin receptor in the sea bream (Sparus aurata)Publication . Santos, Cecilia; Ingleton, P. M.; Cavaco, J. E. B.; Kelly, P. A.; Edery, M.; Power, DeborahThe prolactin receptor (PRLR) was cloned and its tissue distribution characterized in adults of the protandrous hermaphrodite marine teleost, the sea bream (Sparus aurata). An homologous cDNA probe for sea bream PRLR (sbPRLR) was obtained by RT-PCR using gill mRNA. This probe was used to screen intestine and kidney cDNA libraries from which two overlapping clones (1100 and 2425 bp, respectively) were obtained.
- A juvenile recruitment prediction model for Ruditapes decussatus (L.) (Bivalvia : Mollusca)Publication . Chícharo, Luís; Chicharo, Maria Alexandra TeodosioDespite the importance of larval abundance in determining the recruitment of benthic marine invertebrates and as a major factor in marine benthic community structure, relating planktonic larval abundance with post-settlement post-larvae and juveniles in the benthos is difficult. It is hampered by several methodological difficulties, including sampling frequency, ability to follow larval and post-larval or juvenile cohorts, and ability to calculate growth and mortality rates. In our work, an intensive sampling strategy was used. Larvae in the plankton were collected at weekly intervals, while post-larvae that settled into collectors were analysed fortnightly. Planktonic larval and benthic post-larval/juvenile cohorts were determined, and growth and mortality rates calculated. Integration of all equations allowed the development of a theoretical formulation that, based on the abundance and planktonic larval duration, permits an estimation of the future abundance of post-larvae/juveniles during the first year of benthic life. The model can be applied to a sample in which it was necessary only to measure larval length.
- Portuguese jocular and novellistic tales in Francisco Xavier de Ataíde Oliveira's collection of folktales from AlgarvePublication .
- A coupled electromagnetic transformer model for the analysis of winding inter-turn short-circuitsPublication . Oliveira, L. M. R.; Cardoso, A. J. MarquesThis paper presents the development and implementation of a coupled electromagnetic transformer model for the simulation of three-phase power and distribution transformers affected by the presence of winding inter-turn short-circuits. Generically, the coupled electromagnetic transformer model is based on the simultaneous consideration of both magnetic and electric equivalent circuits. To incorporate the internal faults in this model a suitable equivalent circuit of the faulty winding is proposed. Both simulation and laboratory tests results are presented in the paper, which demonstrate the adequacy of the proposed model.
- Modelação ecológica no estuário do SadoPublication .
- Effects of environmental conditions on planktonic abundances, benthic recruitment and growth rates of the bivalve mollusc Ruditapes decussatus in a Portuguese coastal lagoonPublication . Chícharo, Luís; Chicharo, AlexandraControlling environmental parameters for the early stages of marine invertebrates have received little attention, particularly in field studies. This study involves measurement of abundances and growth rates of the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus Linnaeus 1758 during its planktonic larval and early benthic life stages in a coastal lagoon: Ria Formosa, Portugal. Measured abundances were compared with tidal amplitude, water temperature, salinity, wind velocity and direction, and a food availability indicator 2chlorophyll a). Data were obtained on abundance and prodissoconch length of the larvae, measured two tothreetimes perweek, and ofpost-larval stagesindividuals thathadsettled inartificial collectors over10months.Larval and juvenile cohorts were identified using size-frequency distributions and larval ages estimated by larval shell growth lines.
