- UniHI 4: new tools for query, analysis and visualization of the human protein-protein interactomePublication . Chaurasia, Gautam; Malhotra, Soniya; Russ, Jenny; Schnoegl, Sigrid; Haenig, Christian; Wanker, Erich; Futschik, Matthias E.Human protein interaction maps have become important tools of biomedical research for the elucidation of molecular mechanisms and the identification of new modulators of disease processes. The Unified Human Interactome database (UniHI, http://www.unihi.org) provides researchers with a comprehensive platform to query and access human protein-protein interaction (PPI) data. Since its first release, UniHI has considerably increased in size. The latest update of UniHI includes over 250 000 interactions between similar to 22 300 unique proteins collected from 14 major PPI sources. However, this wealth of data also poses new challenges for researchers due to the complexity of interaction networks retrieved from the database. We therefore developed several new tools to query, analyze and visualize human PPI networks. Most importantly, UniHI allows now the construction of tissue-specific interaction networks and focused querying of canonical pathways. This will enable researchers to target their analysis and to prioritize candidate proteins for follow-up studies.
- Cytogenetics of Bolinus brandaris and phylogenetic inferences within the Muricidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda)Publication . Leitao, Alexandra; Vasconcelos, Paulo; Ben-Hamadou, Radhouan; Gaspar, Miguel; Barroso, Carlos M.; Ruano, FranciscoThe purple dye murex, Bolinus brandaris (Linnaeus, 1758), is a muricid gastropod common throughout the Mediterranean and along the Moroccan and Portuguese Atlantic coasts. In the present study, we confirmed the diploid chromosome number of 2n = 70 for this species, and established for the first time the karyotype, which comprised 12 metacentric, 15 submetacentric and eight subtelocentric chromosome pairs. To facilitate cytotaxonomic comparisons, we carried out a comparative karyological analysis through multidimensional scaling between B. brandaris and three other 2n = 70 muricid species (Hexaplex trunculus, Ocenebra erinaceus, and Stramonita haemastoma) for which chromosomal measurements have been previously published. The interpretation of the ideograms and the statistical analysis highlighted the closest similarity of B. brandaris and H. trunculus compared to S. haemastoma and O. erinaceus. Indeed, B. brandaris and H. trunculus showed the smallest dissimilarities both for relative length and arm ratio, with O. erinaceus presenting intermediate values, whereas the highest dissimilarities were found between H. trunculus and S. haemastoma for both data. The karyotypes of B. brandaris and H. trunculus (subfamily Muricinae) presented the highest proportions of metacentric chromosomes compared to the other two muricids analysed, suggesting that those karyotypes could be considered primitive within the 2n = 70 Muricidae studied so far.
- Immunohistochemical detection of estrogen receptors in fish scalesPublication . Pinto, Patricia IS; Estêvão, M. Dulce; Redruello, Begoña; Socorro, S.; Canario, Adelino V. M.; Power, DeborahCalcium mobilization from internal stores, such as scales, induced by 17b-estradiol during sexual maturation in salmonids is well documented. This calcium mobilization from scales is proposed to be mediated by the estrogen receptor (ER). However, the ER subtypes involved and signaling mechanisms responsible for this effect remain to be fully characterized. In the present study, we have localized ERa, ERba and ERbb proteins in juvenile and adult sea bream (Sparus auratus) and Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) scales by immunohistochemistry with sea bream ER subtype specific antibodies. The three ERs were detected in isolated or small groups of round cells, in the basal layer of the scales of both juvenile and adult fish and the localization and signal intensity varied with the species and age of the animals. The ERs may be co-localized in cells of the scale posterior region that expressed tartrateresistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), a marker for osteoclasts. These results suggest that the calcium mobilizing action of 17b-estradiol on fish scales is via its direct action on ERs localized in osteoclasts.
- A adaptação académica e saúde mental em alunos universitáriosPublication . Reis, Marco Paulo Mendes; Oliveira, Maria Dolandina de Madeira NetoThe analysis of first year college students’ mental health and academic adjustment are the main objectives of the present study. More specifically, the aim is to investigate if mental health and academic adjustment are related and, if they are influenced by personality traits, wellness, resilience, social support and some demographic variables, such as gender, age and degree. The non probabilistic sample includes 595 students (56 % male), aged between 18 and 72 years old (M = 22.94; SD = 6.90). The variables were assessed using the Mental Health Inventory – MHI-5 – (Ribeiro, 2001), Questionário de Vivências Académicas – QVA-r – (Almeida, Ferreira & Soares, 1999), Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale (1993), Inventário de Personalidade dos Cinco Factores – NEO-FFI-20 – (Bertoquini & Ribeiro, 2007), Escala de Satisfação com o Suporte Social – ESSS – (Ribeiro, s.d.), Questionário de Atitudes e Comportamentos de Saúde – QACS – (Ribeiro, 2004) and with a socio-demographic questionnaire made for this purpose.
