- As visões fotográficas das margens de Salvador, Bahia: experiências narrativas do fotógrafo-narradorPublication . Costa, Claudia; Soares, Ana IsabelThe memory and tradition (of the losers) are the foundations of contemporary History ś narrative. Supported by this argument, upheld by Walter Benjamin, we shall reflect upon the work of three photographers who applied an auteur’s, poetic and aesthetic narrative to Salvador in Bahia. The image of this Brazilian city was built with help from the peripheral vision of Pierre Verger, Mario Cravo Neto and Adenor Gondim; who being passionate about the urban look of the city during the last 70 years. Subverting the norms of discourse imposed by the Bahian elite those artists gave rise to a perspective of the city from the interventions of its inhabitants recording marks left by people living on the margins of society. The “screens”, which covered the deprivation and the city’s forgotten characters, were pulled back by the lenses of the photographers who began to tell stories permeated by daily struggles.
- Algebraic Bethe ansatz for the Sl(2) Gaudin model with boundaryPublication . Cirilo Antonio, N.; Manojlović, Nenad; Ragoucy, E.; Salom, I.Following Sklyanin's proposal in the periodic case, we derive the generating function of the Gaudin Hamiltonians with boundary terms. Our derivation is based on the quasi-classical expansion of the linear combination of the transfer matrix of the XXX Heisenberg spin chain and the central element, the so-called Sklyanin determinant. The corresponding Gaudin Hamiltonians with boundary terms are obtained as the residues of the generating function. By defining the appropriate Bethe vectors which yield strikingly simple off shell action of the generating function, we fully implement the algebraic Bethe ansatz, obtaining the spectrum of the generating function and the corresponding Bethe equations. - Animais versus plantas e estudo do meioPublication .
- TRIB2 as a biomarker for diagnosis and progression of melanomaPublication . Hill, Richard; Kalathur, Ravi Kiran Reddy; Colaco, Laura; Brandao, Ricardo; Ugurel, Selma; Futschik, Matthias; Link, WolfgangMalignant melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer. There is a critical need to identify the patients that could be successfully treated by surgery alone and those that require adjuvant treatment. In this study, we demonstrate that the expression of tribbles2 (TRIB2) strongly correlates with both the presence and progression of melanocyte-derived malignancies. We examined the expression of TRIB2 in addition to 12 previously described melanoma biomarkers across three independent full genome microarray studies. TRIB2 expression was consistently and significantly increased in benign nevi and melanoma, and was highest in samples from patients with metastatic melanoma. The expression profiles for the 12 biomarkers were poorly conserved throughout these studies with only TYR, S100B and SPP1 showing consistently elevated expression in metastatic melanoma versus normal skin. Strikingly we confirmed these findings in 20 freshly obtained primary melanoma tissue samples from metastatic lesions where the expression of these biomarkers were evaluated revealing that TRIB2 expression correlated with disease stage and clinical prognosis. Our results suggest that TRIB2 is a meaningful biomarker reflecting diagnosis and progression of melanoma, as well as predicting clinical response to chemotherapy.
- Bullying: quem merece? Os caminhos escondidos da infância (Bullying: who deserves it? The hidden paths of childhood)Publication .
- Spin polarized state filter based on semiconductor-dielectric-iron-semiconductor multi-nanolayer devicePublication . Makarov, Vladimir; Khmelinskii, IgorPresently we report spin-polarized state transport in semiconductor-dielectric-iron-semiconductor (SDIS) four-nanolayer sandwich devices. The exchange-resonance spectra in such devices are quite specific, differing also from spectra observed earlier in other three-nanolayer devices. The theoretical model developed earlier is extended and used to interpret the available experimental results. A detailed ab initio analysis of the magnetic-field dependence of the output magnetic moment is also performed. The model predicts an exchange spectrum comprising a series of peaks, with the spectral structure determined by several factors, discussed in the paper. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
- Taxonomy, ecology and biogeographical trends of dominant benthic foraminifera species from an Atlantic-Mediterranean estuary (the Guadiana, southeast Portugal)Publication . Camacho, Sarita; Moura, Delminda; Connor, Simon; Scott, David; Boski, T.This study analyses the taxonomy, ecology and biogeography of the species of benthic foraminifera living on the intertidal margins of the Guadiana Estuary (SE Portugal, SW Spain). Of the 54 taxa identified during sampling campaigns in winter and summer, 49 are systematically listed and illustrated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs. Ammonia spp. were the most ubiquitous calcareous taxa in both seasons. Morphological analysis and SEM images suggested three distinct morphotypes of the genus Ammonia, two of which proved to be Ammonia aberdoveyensis on the basis of partial rRNA analyses. Jadammina macrescens and Miliammina fusca were the most ubiquitous agglutinated taxa in the estuary. Jadammina macrescens dominates the upper-marsh zones almost exclusively, occurring at very high densities. Ammonia spp. are the most abundant in the low-marsh and tidal-flats of the lower reaches of the Guadiana Estuary, but are widespread throughout the estuary, especially during summer when environmental conditions favor their proliferation. Miliammina fusca dominates the sparsely vegetated low-marsh and tidal-flat zones of the upper reaches, where it is associated with calcareous species. Due to its geographical position, the Guadiana system shares characteristics of both Atlantic and Mediterranean estuaries. This is reflected in the foraminiferal assemblages, with a dominance of thermophilous species and an ecological zonation typical of the Mediterranean climatic zone.
- Electrical conduction of LiF interlayers in organic diodesPublication . Bory, Benjamin F.; Gomes, Henrique L.; Janssen, Rene; de Leeuw, Dago M.; Meskers, StefanAn interlayer of LiF in between a metal and an organic semiconductor is commonly used to improve the electron injection. Here, we investigate the effect of moderate bias voltages on the electrical properties of Al/LiF/poly(spirofluorene)/Ba/Al diodes by systematically varying the thickness of the LiF layer (2-50 nm). Application of forward bias V below the bandgap of LiF (V < E-g similar to 14 V) results in reversible formation of an electrical double layer at the LiF/poly(spirofluorene) hetero-junction. Electrons are trapped on the poly(spirofluorene) side of the junction, while positively charged defects accumulate in the LiF with number densities as high as 10(25)/m(3). Optoelectronic measurements confirm the built-up of aggregated, ionized F centres in the LiF as the positive trapped charges. The charged defects result in efficient transport of electrons from the polymer across the LiF, with current densities that are practically independent of the thickness of the LiF layer. - Effect of Bacillus velezensis and Glomus intraradices on fruit quality and growth parameters in strawberry soilless growing systemPublication . Palencia, Pedro; Martinez, Fatima; Pestana, Maribela; Oliveira, Jose A.; Correia, Pedro J.This study evaluates the effect on the 'Splendor' and 'Primoris' strawberry cultivars of different dates of inoculation with Glomus intraradices, an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus. Additionally, plants were grown in a soilless growing system with or without Bacillus velezensis at the beginning of the experiment. A completely randomized block design (2 biofertilizer treatments x 2 cultivars x 3 inoculation dates) with 2 replications was used. Each replicate consisted of one bag with 10 plants. Fruit weight, fruit quality, growth parameters, and SPAD values in young leaves were monitored from October 2011 to June 2012 in a greenhouse. At the end of the crop cycle, the microbial population of Bacillus spp. and the Glomus intraradices population were determined from the rhizosphere of the plant. Bacillus velezensis and Glomus intraradices were established in the strawberry soilless growing system. The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizae on strawberry fruit quality was more important than that on growth parameters. Biofertilizer with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi had an inhibitory effect on fruit quality, as indicated by low TSS, pH, and TA values. The combined effect of the biofertilizer and inoculation dates of Glomus intraradices on growth parameters was more significant in the 'Primoris' cultivar than in 'Splendor'. In both cultivars, an increase in SPAD values was observed from week 12 to week 22 after planting. Depending on the cultivar selected, the date of inoculation may significantly affect plant response to AM fungal colonization in a soilless growing system.
