- Frailty and outcomes in elderly ICU patients: insights from a portuguese cohortPublication . Lourenço, Eva; Rodrigues, Isabel; Sampaio, Mário; da Costa, EmiliaBackground: Frailty is a key determinant of outcomes in critically ill elderly patients, but data from Portugal remain limited. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the prevalence and prognostic impact of frailty among elderly ICU patients in a Portuguese hospital setting. Objective: To determine the prevalence of frailty among elderly patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) in southern Portugal and to examine its crude associations with illness severity, organ support, and mortality outcomes. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including 125 patients aged ≥ 65 years admitted to the polyvalent ICU of Hospital de Faro over the last six months of 2024. Data included demographics, comorbidities, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), severity scores (SOFA, SAPS II, APACHE II), and frailty status assessed by the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS). Outcomes were the need for organ support, ICU and hospital mortality, and length of stay. Results: Frailty (CFS ≥ 5) was identified in 30.4% of patients. Frail patients were older, had higher comorbidity burden (CCI), and presented with significantly higher severity scores at admission. They also required more invasive support, including vasopressors and invasive mechanical ventilation, while acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) was similar between groups. ICU mortality was significantly higher among frail patients (50.0% vs. 31.0%), as was hospital mortality (76.3% vs. 33.3%). Length of ICU stay did not differ, although frail patients tended to have longer hospitalizations overall. Conclusions: Frailty was highly prevalent and strongly associated with increased severity, greater need for organ support, and higher mortality. Routine frailty assessment at ICU admission may enhance prognostic accuracy and support patient-centered decision-making.
- How artificial intelligence can enable personalized mesenchymal stem cell–based therapeutic strategies in systemic lupus erythematosusPublication . Kumar, Sushmitha Rajeev; He, Khor Kai; Lokanathan, Yogeswaran; Gaurav, Anand; Yusoff, Khatijah; Macedo, M. Fatima; Bhassu, SubhaMesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) are increasingly recognized as promising candidates for treating Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) due to their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. However, their therapeutic efficacy remains inconsistent, largely due to the heterogeneity of MSC origins, culture conditions, cell quality, host immune interactions, and the influence of immunosuppressive treatments. Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers powerful tools to address these challenges by optimising MSC modification and application. This review explores how AI can identify optimal genetic and epigenetic targets, predict MSC behaviour under different environmental and priming conditions, and design personalise therapies tailored to individual patients. Moreover, AI enables the analysis of extensive datasets to refine dosing strategies and improve the integration of MSC therapy with immunosuppressants. By enhancing the precision, consistency, and personalisation of MSC-based interventions, AI has the potential to significantly improve therapeutic outcomes in SLE, advancing the field toward more effective and patient-centred autoimmune disease management.
- From the atelier populaire to artivism. Situationist strategies reimaginedPublication . Cavalcanti, Maria Cristina; Tavares, Mirian; Arantes, Priscila Almeida CunhaThe following paper examines the progression of artivism by tracing the visual strategies employed by the Atelier Populaire during the May’ 68 protests, tactics influenced by the Situationist International, and investigates their relationship to contemporary artivist practices, particularly in the field of digital media art. The article focuses on the legacy of these strategies and explores the trajectories of Richard Hambleton, Blek le Rat and Banksy, emphasizing their contributions to social and political discourse through art. It highlights the prioritization of message over aesthetics, the democratization of public space, unsigned drawings, stencils, and other low-cost techniques, direct as well as symbolic imagery. The study concludes by examining the current relevance of artivism across various platforms, including digital media, and investigates how these new mediums reshape and amplify the scope and modalities of artivism in the contemporary context.
- Subjective views: video art as a mirror of culture and artistic performancePublication . Henriques, Pedro Miguel; Jorge Agostinho Alves da Veiga, PedroThis article proposes the concept of documentary video art through the analysis of the role of subjectivity in videographic works of a documentary nature, as a record of artistic and cultural performances, demonstrating how the authorial perspective can enrich this type of record and broaden its interpretive horizons. Through a theoretical approach and the analysis of three case studies, Moon Moth Bed by Virginia L. Montgomery, A Love Song for Latasha by Sophia Nahli Allison, and Consonant Camera by E. V. Aleksandrov, the study explores how video art integrates documentary fidelity, poetic narrative, and aesthetic innovation. The concepts of the Consonant Camera, fragmented visual memories, and natural metaphors illustrate strategies that combine ethics, creativity, and cultural sensitivity. It is argued that video art, by transcending the boundaries between art and documentation, is an essential medium for preserving intangible cultural heritage and constructing narratives that blend critical reflection and aesthetic experience.
- The plasticity of generative artificial intelligence in materialized artistic practice. case study ‘in/visibilidades no feminino 2.0’.Publication . Palma, Celia; Carvalho, Isabel Cristina; Tavares, MirianThis article offers a critical examination of the convergence between art and technology, exploring how the generative plasticity of Artificial Intelligence reconfigures emerging artistic practices. It analyses the transformations introduced by Generative Artificial Intelligence, which metamorphoses modes of expression, production, and authorship while simultaneously enabling the subversion of hegemonic narratives and the emergence of new digital aesthetics. The analysis focuses on the materialisation of artistic artefacts through generative processes, with particular emphasis on the case study in/visibilidades no feminino 2.0, an experimental project that employs GenAI as a device for the symbolic recomposition of female identity, supported by ethnographic imagery and critical mediation strategies. The results demonstrate that GenAI can operate as an agent of co-authorship and interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering the reinscription of gendered subjectivities and opening space for new forms of representativity in contemporary art. Informed by Donna Haraway’s posthumanist perspective [1], this reflection problematises the relations between technology, hybridity, and identity construction, highlighting generative plasticity as a field of aesthetic experimentation and sociocultural transformation.
- Digital masks: reimagining digital media for co-presence with the kogiPublication . Šnajberková, Jaroslava; Bidarra, José; Tavares, MirianThis paper presents an art-based research on digital media and indigenous communities. It departs from Kogi sacred masks to discuss community life and how digital media can serve as a relational, ethically attuned environment for engaging with indigenous communities in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. Grounded in visual ethnography, autoethnography, and analogue photography, the project explores how image-making may shift from mere acts of capture to practices of co-presence, inner silence, and respectful withholding. The work draws from the story of two sacred ritual masks repatriated from Berlin to the Kogi in 2023, using them as both material artefacts and conceptual metaphors for opacity, sovereignty, and spiritual integrity. Through digital fragments, ambient sound, underexposed imagery, and poetic interruption, the digital arts project challenges conventional representation and contributes to a decolonial visual methodology rooted in care and attentiveness.
- Digital media art and archaeologies of the invisible: the case of mãe soberana in dialogue with ZielinskiPublication . Mendonça Pintassilgo, Andreia Isabel; Soares, Ana Isabel; Guerriero, MariaDigital media art, an artistic expression emerging from contemporary technological culture, signals a revolution in how cultural experiences are transmitted and lived. In this context, the case “Mãe Soberana – Our Lady of Piety,” in Loulé, exemplifies the convergence between art, technology, and intangible heritage. Using tools such as augmented reality, video art, QR codes, and artificial intelligence (AI), the project proposes an interactive and participatory reinterpretation of Marian devotion, integrating memory, faith, and innovation. Inspired by Zielinski’s Media Archaeology, the study adopts a non-linear reading of technological history and explores relationships between the visible and the invisible, the sacred and the digital. The methodology combines an a/r/tographic, qualitative, and participatory approach, involving the local community in building digital narratives and safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. This proposal resonates directly with Siegfried Zielinski’s Media Archaeology diagram by adopting a non-linear reading of media history and valuing the multiplicity of trajectories, layers, and technologies. Devotion to Mãe Soberana is reinterpreted as a hybrid territory of artistic expression, where digital technologies are not merely mediation tools but devices for creation, evocation, and participation. The research proposes an archaeology of the invisible, revealing symbolic and affective layers of the devotion through technological mediation. It thus contributes to reflection on the ethical and critical integration of digital art in the valorization of intangible cultural heritage.
- Memory, montage, and counter-narratives: a digital media installationPublication . Cavalcanti, Maria CristinaThis work presents the multimedia installation [Des]montagem, which articulates memory, history, and aesthetics through the appropriation and recontextualisation of archival materials related to repression during the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship (1964–1985). Rooted in concepts of memory and montage, the installation challenges the unequal formation of memory and the influence of dominant narratives in official history, while aiming to validate silenced voices. Drawing from the works of Walter Benjamin and Aby Warburg, [Des]montagem utilizes visual, auditory, and interactive components to establish a realm for confronting and contemplating the past and the present. The installation also includes a virtual version that broadens public access, enabling new forms of engagement. The project highlights the potential of digital art to politicise memory and foster critical thinking, showing that we are active agents in the construction of our own history.
