- A hybrid modelling approach for eliciting health state preferences: the Portuguese EQ-5D-5L value setPublication . Ferreira, Pedro L.; Antunes, Patricia; Ferreira, Lara; Pereira, LN; Ramos-Goni, Juan M.Background The EQ-5D is a generic preference-based quality of life measure considered useful for supporting clinical and policy decisions by providing utility values that can easily be converted into quality-adjusted life years to be integrated in cost-utility economic evaluations. Although the three-level classification system of the EuroQol questionnaire (EQ-5D-3L) is still the most popular preference-based instrument used worldwide, several studies reported a ceiling effect on this version, especially in healthy and/or young individuals. In 2009, the EuroQol Group introduced a five-level EQ-5D, which expands the descriptive system from three to five levels within the same five dimensions. For this version to be used in health economic evaluation, societal values need to be assigned to the 3125 health states generated by this instrument. Objectives The aims of this study were to elicit the EQ-5D-5L health state preferences from the general Portuguese population and to derive the Portuguese value set for the EQ-5D-5L. Methods A representative sample of the Portuguese general population aged above 18 years was stratified by age and gender (n = 1451). Between October 2015 and July 2016, 28 interviewers carried out a series of 1-h-long computer-assisted personal interviews following the EuroQol Valuation Technology protocol. Each interview included the valuation of ten health states using the composite time trade-off (cTTO) and seven pairs of discrete choice experiments (DCEs). A standardized tool for quality control was used to assess the quality of the data as well as direct supervision and cross-examination of 10% of the global sample size. Data from both cTTO and DCE valuation tasks were modelled using a censored heteroskedastic hybrid model. Results Interviewers complied with the quality control protocol in providing high-quality valuation data. The hybrid econometric model had consistent and significant parameters. The derived societal values for the Portuguese population ranged from - 0.603 to 1. Conclusion This study provided the Portuguese value set for the EQ-5D-5L on the basis of a hybrid econometric model using cTTO and DCE data. These results represent the preferences of the Portuguese population and are recommended to inform health decision-making in Portugal.
- A marketing strategy for a new functional fishPublication . Pereira, LN; Mendes, Júlio da Costa; Mendes, Joana PimentelThe successful development and bringing to market of a new fortified sea bream depends not only on the additional nutrients that it may include and the multiple health benefits that it might generate, but also on consumer habits, needs, wants, and their willingness to accept a new functional food product. In order to produce information on supporting entrepreneurs' investment decisions with respect to a new functional fish, a market research study was performed in order to gather market data. The descriptive study aimed to measure: consumption habits with respect to all types of fish; the market share of aquaculture fish; market size and channels; the factors determining the acceptance of the new product; the consumer probability of buying and recommending the new product; the fair price of the new product; and the consumer profile. The results of this study were used to design a marketing strategy for the new food product to meet the Portuguese market requirements.
- A place in the sun? Discursive constructions of positive outcomes in post-migration stories in the AlgarvePublication . Torkington, Kate; Ribeiro, Filipa PerdigãoThis study argues for more comparative research between seemingly different migrant groups, bringing a new focus on intra-European migration in Portugal by examining and comparing the reasons why migrants from different geographical origins choose to settle in the tourism-based Algarve region. Drawing on data collected from a questionnaire survey and interviews, the study first compares the profiles of two apparently distinct migrant groups - Northern and Eastern Europeans - and goes on to explore their discursive representations of migration experiences. Findings reveal that despite differences in initial motivations for moving to the Algarve, there are similarities between the two groups in terms of what leads them to settle in the region. Among both groups there is a high level of positive place-identity, suggesting that the specific context of the destination place plays a significant role in positive post-migration outcomes, something which is often overlooked in migration studies. Furthermore, the lived and perceived lifestyle affordances of the destination place, especially when discursively compared with the place and lifestyle left behind, are flagged by both groups and lend support to the idea that the role of lifestyle in migration has a wider significance than is usually credited.
- A small place, by Jamaica Kincaid: envisioning literary tourism in AntiguaPublication . Baleiro, Rita; Quinteiro, SílviaThis work departs from a reading of the novelistic essay A small place (1988), by Jamaica Kincaid, to analyse the representation of the tourism industry and of tourists in Antigua (the author's birthplace). From there, we present Kincaid's text as ?tourist literature? (Hendrix, 2014), also aiming to contribute to the examination of tourism-centred literary texts. Within the context of literature and tourism studies as well as comparative studies, this paper examines Kincaid's literary text in order to consider the promotion of literary tourism in Antigua. This example is then considered in light of recent contributions from literary tourism, space production, community-based tourism, mass tourism as well as responsible and sustainable tourism. Literary heritage as a resource for the tourism industry could bring tourists and locals closer and conspire to break down barriers between the largely dark-skinned hosts and the white tourists in Antigua.
- Adaptation of web pages of hotels in mobile devicesPublication . Sanchez Jimenez, Miguel Angel; Correia, Marisol B.; de Matos, NelsonMobile devices have become an essential element for users. This fact cannot go unnoticed by brands and business participants, who see a great opportunity to address consumers, thus fulfilling one of the maxims of marketing, in which these participants must be where the consumers are. In this way, the concept of responsive web is essential, which allows the content of the web pages to be adapted to the mobile device, thus improving the mobile consumer experience. In this context, the touristic offer is considered of special relevance being one of the sectors in which users seek more information and make more purchases through mobile devices. Thus, in this study we have analyzed the adaptation of the websites of the hotels in the province of Cadiz to mobile devices. The results in general are positive, however, it has been shown that the web pages of the hotels have not been fully adapted to these devices yet, highlighting the low visibility and size of the text, as well as the scarce availability of the reservation section in the homepage.
- Adapting creative problem solving to an organizational context: a study of its effectiveness with a student populationPublication . Cardoso de Sousa, Fernando; Monteiro, Ileana; Walton, Andre; Pissarra, JoãoOwing to company time restrictions and concentration on project development, we began to reduce the duration of creative problem solving (CPS) sessions, and to give more emphasis to the action planning stage. Several changes in our CPS protocol, as well as in its duration, begged the question as to whether these changes were jeopardizing efficacy. To examine this question, six groups of ten university students, working under two different CPS protocols (a five-step method and a four-step method), and three control groups (using no CPS method), were given the same objective and similar conditions. This exploratory experiment compared group performance by change in team commitment, divergent thinking preferences, productivity and the participants' evaluation of the different methods. Results show that the CPS methods were both effective in changing participants' perspectives regarding divergent thinking and team commitment. In the control groups, however, there were no changes as a consequence of the sessions. Results also suggest that the same problem-solving effectiveness can be attained in a shorter time than that traditionally used, and without prior training in CPS. These findings open the door to developing new problem-solving techniques and team work processes, and to more efficient organizational creativity and innovation methodologies.
- Adapting large group methods to civic forums: a way to improve citizenship and democracyPublication . Cardoso de Sousa, Fernando; Monteiro, Ileana Pardal; Gaspar, Maria Filomena; Castelão, PaulaThis article aims to assess the effectiveness of a four-step large-group method, by means of a project commitment questionnaire. Using this method, nine civic foruns were planned and executed in order to develop the participation of civil society in democracy. A toral of three hundred and eighteen civil society representatives produced action plans for the celebration of the anniversary of the 25 April 1974 (Portuguese Revolution), as well as for local development. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in producing action plans in little time, and an increase in commitment to projects as a result of the sessions; however, it did not reveal itself a successful predictor of projects' execution. The foruns allowed us to improve the large-group methods, which may be used as a tool to help improve civil participation in decision making and regional development.
- Advantages, limitations and solutions in the use of ERP systems (Enterprise Resource Planning). A case study in the hospitality industryPublication . Azevedo, Paula Serdeira; Romão, Mário; Rebelo, EfigénioEnterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP) have emerged as solutions oriented to manage organization´s resources in an integrated way. They allowed the automation of its department’s activities, made information available to users at the right time, supporting more accurately their decision-making needs. However, although the implementation of these systems has brought considerable benefits to users, they don’t cover all processes from all industries. Many organizations have recognized this limitation, and consequently felt the need to implement specific solutions to their industry, sector or line of business. From the collected case study business drivers and objectives, we then analyzed the advantages and limitations of ERP Systems in the hospitality industry, in order to understand how this industry uses ERP Systems and solves the challenge of integrating information spread through several heterogeneous information systems.
