  • Ways to open innovation: main agents and sources in the Portuguese case
Publication . Fernandes, Silvia; Cesário, Marisa; Barata, J. M.
Facing increasing open innovation trends, Portuguese enterprises are considering the related processes and impacts. Thus, this work aims to identify the sectors whose enterprises most engage in open innovation (such as cooperation on this issue) and which sources/agents are most used. This is analyzed by sector and type of innovation as an interesting way of differentiation for better open innovation strategy delineation. Using the data from the Community Innovation Survey (CIS-2012), it first appraises the nature of the innovation process, either cooperative or firm-based, as the starting level of analysis. Then, it differentiates the results by sector illustrating which cooperation sources/agents are most used (scope) and relative intensity of use (scale). This is important to assess levels of openness and related factors. Results show that main innovating sectors in Portugal are of three types: research-based, knowledge-based and service-based. They reveal an increasing focus on knowledge and services, trends that have been leading to more active openness towards innovation. For instance, health and construction are increasing their openness for innovating and internationalizing processes. However, Portuguese innovation is still more firm-based (in-house) than cooperation-based, especially concerning new products' launching. This work and future analyzes around it can contribute to encourage the open innovation strategy in more sectors of the economy as an easy and effective way to cope with rapid trends and changes. • Diagnóstico do SI do INEM: fragilidades e mudanças em curso
    Publication . Fernandes, Silvia Brito
  • Business simulators and lecturer’s perception! The case of University of Algarve
Publication . Kikot, Tatiana; Costa, Gonçalo; Fernandes, Silvia Brito
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the usage of simulation/serious games in the University of Algarve (Portugal), because these novel learning environments are still on an early stage of adoption. Members of the Faculty of Economics (in a total 60 lecturers and their assistants) participated in this study through a mixed survey (closed and ask for agreement queries). The empirical evidences denote interesting results: (i) a response rate of 43 percent; (ii) these tools increase learning engagement; (iii) the lack of information and not sufficient alignment with the course unit hinders the uptake of these technologies within classrooms; (iv) lecturers have a positive perception and consider them as valuable for students’ better learning. Hence, this survey provides a good platform for future research and approaches how to promote a better exploration of simulation/serious games and their integration into course curriculum. To conclude, this paper will be divided into five sections: (i) research statement; (ii) research design (aims/objectives, research methodology and data collection/analysis); (iii) findings (lecturers’ profile, awareness, experiences and results summary); (iv) limitations and future work (methodological limitations and tools/ analysis upgrade); and, (v) conclusions.
  • Ambientes colaborativos virtuais: potencial das redes sociais. O caso das empresas do Algarve
Publication . Belo, Ana; Castela, Guilherme; Fernandes, Silvia Brito
  • Determinants of entrepreneurship in small and medium entreprises in the defense sector
    Publication . Almeida, H.; Briones-Peñalver, Antonio-Juan; Fernandes, Silvia Brito
  • Business intelligence and contribution of entrepreneurial information architecture
    Publication . Fernandes, Silvia Brito
We are witnessing the need for a quick and intelligent reaction from organizations to the level and speed of change in business processes. The arising problems can be: from wrong lasting information; systems not fully used or explored; slow reaction to change; etc. This requires two main confluent action methods: people to synchronize their visions, ideas and strategies in the whole organization; and, in that context, select the information that strictly answers to the performance factors at the right moment. The proposed methodology turns to the potential of approach to the entrepreneurial architecture as well as to the potential of the information system in order to integrate the data and resources needed for that performance. The modeling of an information architecture of the company and its business helps in the identification of critical information, the one which is according to the mission, prospects and business success factors.
  • How small and medium enterprises are using social networks? Evidence from the Algarve region
Publication . Belo, Ana; Castela, Guilherme; Fernandes, Silvia Brito
The evolution of internet created new opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SME), among which are social networks. This work aims at analyzing the potential of these networks for the SME in Algarve, creating a questionnaire for the purpose. The empirical study revealed that some firms have already an integrated business strategy with social networks, as well as a group in the firm responsible for it. Most of their managers consider that social networks enhance performance, but few really measure these results. A categorical principal component analysis identified two dimensions of social networks’ use: social networks for product-client interaction and knowledge; and social networks with potential for marketing. A supplementary analysis (hierarchical clustering) identified three patterns of SME’s involvement in social networks: cluster Social Net Level 1, cluster Social Net Level 2 and cluster Social Net Level 3. These groups validated the results described above, indicating a sustainable methodological approach.
  • The use of design as a strategic tool for innovation: an analysis for different firms' networking behaviours
Publication . Cesário, Marisa; Agapito, Dora; Almeida, H.; Fernandes, Silvia
Current research indicates that the use of design strategy in companies is related to innovation and leads to competitiveness. This research aims empirically to analyse the relationship between firms' networking behaviours and their propensity to engage in design activities. Although much of the literature on networks focuses on the relationship between the development of external linkages and innovation, we argue that small and medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs)' relationships with different agents and intermediaries, on diverse geographic scales, play an important role for how companies use design as an element of innovation. Using the Community Innovation Survey (CIS 2012) database for Portugal, a logistic regression was performed using the strategic use of design' as a binary dependent variable. We found that firms' engagement in informal relationships with heterogeneous agents, such as public customers, consultants or conference partners, is positively associated with the strategic use of design. The use of firms' internal assets as information sources also proved to be significant. Regarding market relations, the results indicate that a geographic scaling-up contributes to increasing the odds of a firm recognizing the strategic role of design for competitiveness.
  • Sistemas de informação como indicadores de qualidade na saúde: uma revisão de níveis de abordagem
Publication . Fernandes, Silvia; Tareco, Eugénia
The introduction of new technologies in several areas of activity creates impact at the economic, social and organizational level. Health organizations must keep up with new demand patterns to respond to current challenges. Health information systems (HIS) aim to promote quality and continuity of healthcare. Thus, the main objectives of this work are: 1) to identify advantages and disadvantages of health information systems, particularly in nursing, for the quality of care and 2) assess whether such systems can be quality indicators. It uses a literature review, of scientific articles related to these goals. Most of these articles states that nursing information systems (NIS) are an important tool of work and quality assessment. There is a growing perspective of HIS oriented to results and organizational intelligence. Here lies an important factor of performance, which is very relevant in health.
  • QR codes: A case of its level of adoption in Portugal
Publication . Lopes Bolzan, Roberson; Ventura, Paula; Fernandes, Silvia; Lampreia Carvalho, Fatima
The choice of this work arises from the interest in the topics of entrepreneurship and technology transfer toward launching more innovative products/services. It focuses on delivering a technology, QR code, which brings more innovation to a product especially with the current growth of mobile activities. Then, with the help of a strategic plan, it evaluates the level of potential acceptation and adoption of the proposed service and of widespread use of QRs in Portugal. Thus, an interactive prototype of the supporting platform is described and used for its validation with users. Most participants in this project know the technology and consider the idea interesting and promising. They even suggest add-ons such as more video functions and a higher variety of events and/or resources for combination. However, through a deeper analysis, aspects related with effective use of the service, eventual payment, and explaining how it works reveal lower enthusiasm. Thus, although there is a promising scenario for its implementation in the Portuguese market, training aimed at effectively knowing and using QR-code technology must evolve. Given the challenges of today's society, the future application of this product/service shall pass through an innovation acspecialized information or resources for activities in the areas of tourism, banking, health, etc.
