Abstract(s)
The implementation of vocational education in public secondary schools in Portugal has proven to be a highly sought-after educational opportunity by young people who wish to enter a more practical type of education. Since this type of education is more aligned with the labour market, and since vocational education students now have the opportunity to continue their studies, this dissertation aimed to: 1) understand the motivations of students for choosing vocational education; 2) identify the main influences on the choice of vocational education; and 3) understand the career expectations of vocational education students. In this sense, a qualitative methodological approach was chosen, involving 17 semi-structured interviews with secondary school students enrolled in vocational courses. The results suggest that most students choose this type of education because it allows them to put theoretical learning into practice, considering it an easier way to learn and develop skills. Therefore, it seems that vocational education is mostly sought by students who were looking for a practical education path rather than due to learning difficulties. Regarding career expectations, although most intend to pursue higher education, the responses were quite vague, suggesting that they have not yet reflected on what they expect from their future professional careers.
