Abstract(s)
In the last few years, the Emergency Department (ED) has become the main gateway to the National Health Service in Portugal, thus leading to increasing consumption of human and financial resources and system inefficiencies. The main purpose of this research is to help the decision-making process at the management level, in the largest ED of Litoral Alentejano. Thus, we considered the most incident pathologies in the Medical-Surgical Emergency Department of the Hospital Litoral Alentejano belonging to the Local Health Unit Litoral Alentejano, between 2012 and 2017, and analyzed their influences on hospital production. The goal is to understand the kind of influence between the typologies of users associated with these main pathologies and the available resources for hospital delivery of the service. For the period under analysis, two data structures were evaluated: one containing the descriptors of users and another with descriptors of hospital production, in order to capture a common co-structure that would allow analyzing the relationship between the two structures. The use of the COSTATIS method (Thioulouse, 2011), a multivariate exploratory method of analysis of Three-Way data analysis, highlighted the influence between structures and allowed not only to create priorities but to suggest gap correction initiatives to guide specific management measures.
