Abstract(s)
This report portrays an investigation/intervention within the scope of a curricular internship relating to the Master's in Social Education. Its main objective is to present and evaluate the project SOCIALMente carried out at the Associação Sê Mais Sê Melhor – Associação para a Promoção do Potencial Humano, with the target audience being the students from a 3rd cycle class at a middle school in the municipality of Faro belonging to the Pinheiro e Rosa School Group. Given the development and prevalence of mental disorders in adolescence, promoting Mental Health Literacy (MHL) in adolescents is a determining factor in preventing the occurrence of mental disorders and promoting the well-being of these individuals in the long term (Kelly, Jorm & Wright, 2007). Social Education can play an important role in this sense, empowering adolescents through skills and knowledge about mental health and disorders, in a dialogue of multidisciplinary knowledge within the scope of the contribution of social sciences to collective health (Canesqui, 2003). The project aimed to promote the development of MHL through the implementation of a socio-educational action with the target audience. Action-research was the research method used, with a mixed methods approach. The procedure involved collecting data in three stages: diagnosis, action and evaluation. The descriptive analysis of the data demonstrated that most students had adequate knowledge about anxiety and depression at both moments of analysis, without significant improvements after their participation in the action. Content analysis revealed three main categories from the observation of the socio-educational action: (1) socio-educational strategies, (2) challenges and (3) perceptions about practice. This action-research allowed the development and implementation of a socio-educational action to promote MHL, the understanding of the factors associated with its success and to reflect upon the essential skills for the Social Educator in this type of projects and with this target audience. Thus, despite its limitations, it is considered that this study contributes to the evolution of scientific knowledge in the theoretical-practical field of Social Education, namely its potential for mental health education, as well as to inform the future implementation of programs/ interventions that aim to develop the MHL of adolescents.
