Abstract(s)
This study examines the issue of reduced mobility in the context of tourism and hospitality in Portugal, central areas of the literature review conducted, and provides a comprehensive description of the applicable legal framework in this domain. Interviews were conducted with individuals with reduced mobility to understand their experiences and perspectives regarding accessibility and hotel adaptations at the national level. Questionnaires were also administered to hotel directors to comprehend how they perceive the difficulties faced by guests and the adaptations made within the hotels. The results of the interviews emphasize the importance of accessibility in the hospitality sector, especially concerning bathrooms, which are frequently mentioned as spaces with frequently perceived negative aspects. There is a need for detailed information before booking regarding the features of rooms designated as adapted, as well as a need for proper training of hotel staff to meet the needs of guests with reduced mobility. The study also reveals that the surveyed hotel directors hold different perspectives on the challenges faced by guests with reduced mobility, although they acknowledge the importance of accessible tourism initiatives and improving facilities to meet their needs. In conclusion, this study highlights the need for improvements in hotel accessibility and staff training to provide more inclusive and accessible travel experiences for guests with reduced mobility in Portugal.
