Abstract(s)
This report was developed within the scope of Supervised Teaching Practice (PES), the master's degree in Pre-School Education, from the Higher School of Education and Communication at the University of Algarve. The research project followed the IBSE (Inquiry-Based Science Education) methodology applied in the construction of knowledge related to the flora of the Algarve region and the relationship that exists between the fruit, the respective seed and the tree that produces it. Fifteen children participated in the project, aged between 3 and 5 years old, from a kindergarten located in Faro. The project followed the model of an investigative cycle, with multiple stages, starting with the presentation of the research questions, going through the activities designed to answer the questions and ending with the sharing of new knowledge with the community. Activities included a field trip to observe an orange orchard, the characterization of fruits (orange, almond and carob) using the 5 senses and the germination of seeds from two of these fruits, with visualization of the resulting plants. The construction of new knowledge regarding the recognition of an organized structure of trees for fruit production (orchard) and the differentiation of 3 typical Algarve fruits, namely orange, almond and carob pods, based on colour, shape, texture, flavour, hardness, size, number of seeds and trees that produces them, has been achieved. The experimental approach was used as strategy to construct the concept that almond and carob trees come from the germination of almonds and locust beans.
