Abstract(s)
In this project, we create two literary walks (one in Vila Real de Santo António and another one in Tavira), that we have produced in the context of the studies in tourism and literature. These have been created to promote literary tourism as an economic, social, educational, and cultural development strategy. Literary tourism offers not only leisurely moments but opportunities to discover key literary places, places that inspired writers and places that are somehow linked to their lives. Additionally, literary tourism offers visitors a chance to be acquainted with literary texts and it even may encourage them to read new texts and authors. The synergy between tourists and places brings clear benefits. To diminish the effects of seasonality, to attract new markets and the possibility to showcase the cultural and literary heritage of destinations are just three of many advantages. This is the reason why this project is original. Besides, these two literary walks will become part of the tourist offer of these two Algarvian towns. The project's methodology consist in a literature review of the key concepts in tourism and literature studies (e.g., literary tourism and literary place), the analysis of statistical data on tourist activity in both towns, and non-participant observation of literary tours (in Lisbon and in the Algarve). As far as the construction of the literary itineraries is concerned, the following methodological steps were undertaken: (i) on-site observation of the two towns; (ii) bibliographic research about the authors, whose life and work are connected to the towns; (iii) unstructured interviews with cultural managers, historians and librarians; (iv) mapping of literary places; (v) readings at stopping points to verify the relevance of the texts; (vi) writing the narrative of the literary walk; (vii) testing the itineraries, and (viii) final writing of the narrative.
