Abstract(s)
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is known as one of the most debilitating chronic diseases in the world, and is considered quite dangerous because individuals do not know they have the disease until complications appear and develop. According to the reference values, diabetes is diagnosed when fasting blood glucose ≥ 126 mg/dl; or classic symptoms + occasional blood glucose ≥ 200mg/dl; or blood glucose ≥ 200 mg/dl at 2 hours, in the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with 75 g of glucose; or glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥ 6.5%. Due to its chemical composition, grapes have been the focus of scientific attention in recent years due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may act to inhibit diseases such as cancer, diabetes and inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. Proanthocyanidins are a type of flavonoid found in this fruit that appear to have biological effects, including anti-diabetes, so they are compounds that have attracted the attention not only of the food industry, but also of health organizations due to their potential health benefits. Therapy with grape seed extract has significantly managed glucose homeostasis and insulin secretion, along with improvements in the levels of inflammatory markers and oxidative stress. The aim of this monograph is to carry out a literature review on the impact of grape seed on DM, including a brief contextualization of the disease and evaluating its level of effectiveness as a strategy to combat this pathology and improve health.
