Abstract(s)
This exploratory study on the impact of Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI) in children with cognitive deficit and/or learning disabilities, appears under a master’s course in Special Education, Cognitive and Motor skills, due to reasons both personal and professional. The fact that this is a novel field, still under development and being implemented in Portugal, particularly in the Algarve, as well as the fact this is an area of expertise, I have come to value deeply, due to its positive impact on children, has led to my decision to enlarge our knowledge in the area. With the purpose of understanding what is the understanding that health and education technicians / professionals (with over one year of experience on the implementation / monitoring of AII), regarding their impact on children with cognitive deficit and/or learning disabilities in the Algarve, a survey was conducted on the AII-promoting technicians in the Algarve, as well as an interview of 11 of these technicians. Main results are that IAA on children with cognitive deficit and/or learning disabilities show positive impact, namely: the animal facilitates therapeutic relationship, increases the sense of responsibility, enhances self-esteem, good behaviour and provides calm, provides joy and increases motivation for each work session.
