Abstract(s)
This report entitled "The importance of science in promoting autonomy in Pre-School Education" is part of the curricular unit of Supervised Teaching Practice, developed in a Kindergarten context, more precisely, in a Cooperative Institution, based in Loulé, with a group of 20 children aged between 3 and 5 years old. The main focus of the research component of the PES report is the awareness of the importance of Natural Sciences in Pre-School Education and the cooperating teacher's perception and potential contributions to the promotion of the children's autonomy. In the development of this study it is assumed the creation of a Science Area in the context of an activity room. The construction of this area will be based on the teacher's perception of science, as well as the potential contributions to the promotion of autonomy in children. To build this Science Area, we would collect materials from outside the kindergarten and materials that children could collect from their own homes, from their families. This second option was due to the fact that this report was developed during the second containment related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Science Area, the group of children would have at their disposal several cards that would allow them to categorize the various objects/materials collected at home or at the Kindergarten and develop numerous skills, namely object classification, autonomy, among others. During the construction of the Science Area, as instruments of information collection, activity room observation grids were built and interviews were conducted with the cooperating educator, the first in person and the last via ZOOM. The data analyzed are only the results obtained through the interviews with the cooperating teacher.
