Abstract(s)
A presente
The almost total disappearance of yoke making (cangas e jugos) in Portugal is evident. In the Municipality of Murtosa there is only one yoke-maker left with knowledge about the production processes of these elements. The present dissertation aims to study the canga vareira, considering its transformation in contemporary times, the different types and processes of execution and the specific case of the Murtosa yoke. To this end, its execution process was recorded with the craftsman Joaquim Tavares dos Santos, resident in that municipality, considering its specificity in terms of its manufacture, ornamental motifs and the designation of the different elements and devices used. In methodological terms, this research starts from a bibliographical review on its object of study (canga, jugo, canga vareira, framed in the description of the primary sector activities most relevant to the theme), giving special importance to the conducting of interviews with different interlocutors and the preparation of an inventory of the existing cangas in the municipality of Murtosa. It is intended that, in addition to the survey and characterisation of a material and immaterial heritage in disappearance, this project will also function as a community awareness initiative and an incentive for the responsible entities to consider the conservation of the tradition of the execution of yokes in the municipality of Murtosa.
