Nos últimos anos, tem-se registado uma mudança notória nas relações entre os humanos e os cães. Se, no passado, os cães eram muitas vezes vistos como animais de trabalho ou de guarda, atualmente desempenham papéis cada vez mais diversificados e significativos nas famílias e na vida das pessoas. Uma das mudanças mais proeminentes é a transição dos cães de animais de estimação para serem considerados membros da família. Este estudo parte dessa premissa para analisar as dinâmicas familiares entre humanos e cães sob a perspetiva de famílias híbridas e mais-que-humanas. Neste sentido, esta dissertação investiga a intrincada relação entre humanos e cães no contexto doméstico. Através da utilização de métodos quantitativos e qualitativos, este estudo pretende compreender a dinâmica e os fatores que influenciam estas relações entre os habitantes do concelho de Faro. Ao centrar a investigação nesta localização geográfica específica, este estudo fornece uma perspetiva localizada sobre o fenómeno da relação humano-cão, enquanto contribui para a compreensão sociológica mais ampla da dinâmica familiar e das interações homem-animal. O desenho de investigação mobiliza uma abordagem de triangulação de métodos, utilizando técnicas de recolha quantitativa e qualitativa. Na dimensão quantitativa foi aplicado um inquérito por questionário a 175 habitantes do concelho de Faro que teve como objetivo traçar uma visão geral sobre ligações multifacetadas entre os humanos e os seus companheiros caninos, lançando luz sobre vários aspetos, tais como os papéis que os cães desempenham nas famílias, as rotinas e a partilha do espaço doméstico. Ao nível qualitativo foram aplicadas 8 entrevistas que exploraram as experiências subjetivas, as perceções e as narrativas pessoais relacionadas com as relações entre humanos e cães. Os resultados desta investigação avançam com algumas pistas sobre a complexa natureza das relações entre humanos e cães no seio das famílias, realçando os papéis multifacetados que os cães assumem e o significado emocional que têm. Além disso, este estudo examina a forma como os fatores sociodemográficos influenciam a dinâmica destas relações.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable change in the relationship between humans and dogs. Whereas in the past dogs were often seen as working or guard animals, today they play an increasingly diverse and important role in families and people's lives. One of the most notable changes is the transition of dogs from pets to family members. This study builds on this premise to analyse the family dynamics between humans and dogs from the perspective of hybrid and more than human families. In this sense, this dissertation examines the complex relationship between humans and dogs in the domestic context. Through the use of quantitative and qualitative methods, this study aims to understand the dynamics and factors that influence these relationships among the inhabitants of the municipality of Faro. By focusing the research on this specific geographical location, this study provides a localised perspective on the phenomenon of the human-dog relationship, while contributing to the broader sociological understanding of family dynamics and human-animal interactions. The research design mobilised a triangulation of methods approach, using quantitative and qualitative survey techniques. At the quantitative level, a questionnaire was administered to 175 residents of the municipality of Faro, with the aim of providing an overview of the multifaceted relationships between people and their canine companions, shedding light on various aspects such as the role dogs play in families, routines and the sharing of domestic space. At the qualitative level, 8 interviews were used to explore the subjective experiences, perceptions and personal narratives related to human-dog relationships. The findings of this research provide some insight into the complex nature of human-dog relationships within families, highlighting the multiple roles that dogs play and the emotional significance they hold. In addition, this study explores how socio-demographic factors influence the dynamics of these relationships.
