Abstract(s)
As part of the Supervised Teaching Practice, a study was conducted in the Master's program in Teaching for the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and in Mathematics and Natural Sciences for the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, at the University of Algarve, during the 2023/2024 academic year. The objective was to create a didactic proposal with internal and external connections between Mathematics and Natural Sciences, using the dance of Apis mellifera bees as the central theme. The proposal aimed not only to enrich school curricula but also to foster ecological awareness in students, enabling them to interact with elements of nature in an informed and conscious manner. The learning tasks were developed to explore the behavior of bees, and the mathematical and natural science concepts related to Apis mellifera, the construction of honeycombs, and their communication methods through two types of dances (the round dance and the waggle dance). The approach of integrating the two areas of knowledge aimed to promote more consistent and reflective learning, encouraging critical thinking among students. The practical application of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in real and symbolic contexts made the learning process motivating, demonstrating its relevance in the students' daily lives. The implementation of learning tasks included the use of educational games and Role-Playing Games (RPG), which allowed students to explore mathematical and scientific themes in a playful and interactive manner, promoting cooperation, social interaction, and the acquisition of mathematical-scientific concepts at the level of 2nd Cycle students. In an attempt to answer the research question of this PES report: “How does the dance of bees establish connections between Mathematics and Natural Sciences in a 5th-grade class of Basic Education?”, we can affirm that the 5th-grade students acquired knowledge by establishing internal and external connections while studying the Apis mellifera bee. In the pedagogical implementation, modeling was used in the tiling process to understand the construction of honeycombs, and symbolic representation (Role-Playing Game methodology) was used to demonstrate how bees communicate the existence of a food source to other bees through their dances: the "round dance" and the "waggle dance".
