Abstract(s)
The emotional availability is a key element in the relationship that forms between significant adults and children. It’s related to the quality of emotional dyadic bond, in a system of verbal and non-verbal exchanges, in which the availability and ability to receive, interpret and respond to the signals of the other, are a determinant function. Emotional availability is a central aspect of the relationship that forms between caregiver and children. It’s thus, in this way, important to study the knowledge of the theme. The present study explored the relations of predictability of emotional availability and attachment, mental health, and parental rearing practices in a sample of adoptive fathers. Participated 54 adoptive fathers, residing in the Algarve Region. The sociodemographic data was obtained through The Adoptive Process Parental Opinion Questionnaires (QOPPA). Parental rearing practices were measured with Childhood Memories Scale (EMBU), patterns of adult attachment were determined resorting to Adult Attachment Scale. Emotional Availability was assessed through Emotional Availability Scales. The use of the General Mental Health Questionnaire permitted the assessment of the parent’s mental health. Results indicate: (1) there is a negative association between paternal emotional availability and comfort and trust of attachment; (2) non-hostility and sensitivity are negatively associated with comfort and trust of attachment; (3) overprotection is negatively associated with paternal emotional availability, structuring, and non-intrusiveness; (4) mental health and somatic symptoms are negatively associated with structuring. The practical implications are discussed to raise awareness of the importance of parental rearing practices in infancy and promote parenting skills. At last, contribute to the training of members of the adoption teams.
