Abstract(s)
autorrelato destes constructos.
do estigma do peso e à fusão cognitiva.
The stigma associated with weight provokes stress responses and psychological distress in individuals. The consequences are even more serious when experienced during childhood or adolescence, so it is crucial to develop internal resources, protective against social and family pressures related to body image. This study aims to investigate whether self-concept clarity (having a clear and coherent sense of one’s own personal identity) is a predictor of the internalization of weight-related stigma and general mental health problems, and whether weightassociated stigma and cognitive fusion with weight mediate the relationship between self-concept clarity and general mental health problems. Secondary school students (N = 421) completed self-report measures of these constructs. The mediation model revealed several key findings: self-concept clarity and weight-associated stigma are direct predictors of mental health problems; stigma and cognitive fusion mediate the relationship between self-concept clarity and mental health problems. These findings suggest that low self-concept clarity might contribute to mental health problems because it increases young people´s vulnerability to internalization of weight stigma and cognitive fusion.
