Abstract(s)
A relação entre a produtividade e qualidade exigida atualmente na tradução obriga os
tradutores a recorrer cada vez mais às bases de dados terminológicas produzidas por
grandes organizações como garantia de fiabilidade. Muitos destes recursos apresentam
problemas de validação, nomeadamente quando a validação é feita a nível interno e não
por especialistas da área. Em alguns domínios técnicos e científicos, esta forma de
validação gera equivalentes não totalmente reconhecidos nem aceites pelos especialistas
e profissionais da área. Mais ainda, a utilização generalizada destes termos pelos
tradutores resulta na propagação de variantes terminológicas e numa fossilização dos
termos em alguns registos discursivos, nomeadamente a nível das instituições
governamentais. Usando o exemplo da Aquacultura, apresenta-se uma proposta para
uma base terminológica construída a partir de um corpus de extração formado pela
produção técnica e científica desta universidade, tendo o português como língua
principal de trabalho. Esta base de dados deverá reger-se por um processo de validação
mediado pelo terminólogo em estreita colaboração com especialistas.
Demands currently placed on the relationship between productivity and quality in the process of translation are unique, and increasingly prompt translators to resort to terminological data bases produced by large organizations in the hope that they guarantee reliability. Many of these resources, however, do not fully meet translators’ expectations as they are fraught with validation issues. Term validation is often flawed because it is performed in-house by such organizations, but not by subject area specialists. In some fields, this leads to the generation of equivalents not fully recognized or accepted by domain specialists. Of greater concern is that translators use and disseminate these terminological variants, which gain currency in certain registers at the expense of already established terms, chiefly within public administrations and international organizations. Using the domain of Aquaculture, this project proposes a term base generated from a corpus derived from scientific and technical work done by researchers and scientists at the University of the Algarve. European Portuguese is the primary language for this study due to the paucity of such resources in this language. Maintaining the data base and ensuring proper term validation and quality will require sustainable, close collaboration between the University terminologists and scientists concerned.
