Abstract(s)
This report deals with an exploratory study carried out at the Casa da Primeira Infância in Loulé, with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of integrating the natural world into preschool curriculum practices. In this study, the snail was the animal chosen from the natural environment to develop the different content areas defined in the Curriculum Guidelines for Pre-school Education (OCEPE). The study took place over three weeks, during which structured activities were carried out with 27 preschool children aged between 5 and 6 years. These activities worked on scientific, mathematical, linguistic and social concepts. The children had the opportunity to study the snail outside its natural environment and also to observe the animal's behaviour without being in captivity. A qualitative methodology was used, involving direct observation of the activities and analysis of the results obtained, based on the natural context, in order to understand the impact of the snail on the educational process. The results show that the introduction of the snail provided an enriching learning experience and promoted an integrated and meaningful approach to curricular areas. This study contributes to educational practice by demonstrating the effectiveness of integrating the natural world into the pre-school curriculum and suggests that the use of natural elements can be a valuable strategy for the holistic development of children.
