- Analysis of the strategic leverage of sport dynamics of sport tourism events through a holistic approachPublication . Martins, Rute Sofia Tavares; Mascarenhas, MargaridaThis study focuses on the development of sport dynamics arising from the strategic leverage of sport events and encompassing the planning of tactics and actions conducive to its implementation. Therefore, the objective of this study aims to analyse the sport dynamic leveraging efforts of the event organizers of two non-mega international events. This investigation included the case study of international open water events hosted in Setúbal, Portugal. Data were collected through: (i) documentary analysis covering the period 2010–2022; (ii) field observation of the two events in 2022; and (iii) 14 post-event semi-structured interviews with representatives of the event organizers and a local partner of the events. The data were examined through content analysis using deductive data categorization. The results highlighted the importance of strategic planning of the benefits of sport events, considering both the increase in sport (active and passive) participation and the strengthening of sport organizational capacity. This expanded vision of the development of sport dynamics can maximize more benefits for the host community. The long-term perspective of leveraging local sport dynamics provided by the study of international sport events emphasized the need for a strategic vision that combines an asset-based approach and a community needs-based approach.
- Analyzing the suitability of the strategic economic leverage developed in non‐nega‐sport tourism events to the spectator profilePublication . Mascarenhas, Margarida; Carvalho, Henrique; Pereira, Elsa; Martins, RuteTo maximize the economic benefits, a priori, the destination’s strategic objectives must be defined, and the design of actions to achieve them through the event must be planned, implemented, and analyzed. Therefore, this investigation aimed to analyze the strategic economic leverage developed for two international open water events considering the profile of their nonresident spectators (NRS). This study adopted a mixed research methodology, performing a qualitative and quantitative analysis. Data collection combined documental research, direct observation, semistructured interviews, and questionnaires. The actions implemented in the events covered the short- and long-term economic strategic objectives. Yet, none of the events’ attributes was associated with NRS’ city recommendation. Additionally, accommodation and food/beverage categories concentrated most of NRS’ expenditures. To activate NRS’ spending in entertainment and local commerce, more creativity is needed than the simple distribution of tourist services information. Also, strategic economic leverage should design actions to increase local companies networking, and develop programs to extend the spectators’ stay through a bundling approach, amplifying the activation of the local resources. This study combined the organizational perspective of strategic economic leverage and the profile of NRS, allowing a more comprehensive knowledge to create strategies consistent with the specificities of NRS’ consumption.
- Cocreation of the tourism experience at international sport tourism eventsPublication . Mascarenhas, Margarida; Alves, Joana; Pereira, Elsa; Martins, RuteThe cocreation of the tourist experience in sporting events has received little scientific attention. This study aimed to analyze the influence of cocreation of the tourist experience on the memorability of the experience through the attention and involvement of sporting event tourists, and to verify whether this influence changes with the type of experience (i.e., active participant vs. spectator). A total of 356 questionnaires was collected at two international cycling events held in Portugal in 2021. The data were analyzed with structural equation analysis and a Mann–Whitney test. Cocreation influences attention and involvement, which, in turn, help to explain the relationship between cocreation and memorability, highlighting differences between the two types of experience. For the first time, the on-site cocreation model was applied to sport tourism events. In this touristic context, experiences must be developed through a customized approach based on the creation of hedonic and eudaimonic experiences.
- Educational dimension of olympism: a systematic literature reviewPublication . Santos, Claudia; Pereira, Elsa; Mascarenhas, MargaridaThis paper aimed to systematically review and summarise the latest literature concerning the educational dimension of Olympism, in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the published peer-reviewed articles on the topic. Specifically, the goals were to identify the main research questions and objectives in the educational dimension of Olympism; to describe and characterise the methodologies and research instruments; to analyse the results and main conclusions; to know the limitations and recommendations for future research. Data were collected from four databases: Scopus, ISI Web of Science, Science Direct and SPORTDiscus. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 52 out of 123 studies were selected. Data collection was supported by EndNote X8, and for data content analysis, grounded theory methodology was used with the support of NVivo 11 Pro software. The results revealed that the current research in the field of Olympism education is being developed around two main thematic areas of study: The 'Olympism educational construct' and 'Olympism educational programmes'. This systematic literature review made it possible to characterise the research developed in the scope of Olympism education and to identify the potential unexplored research opportunities for future investigation.
- Exploring strategic multi-leveraging of sport tourism events: An action-research studyPublication . Martins, Rute; Mascarenhas, Margarida; Pereira, ElsaStrategic planning of sport events should promote the maximisation of local communities' benefits. Among other dimensions of interest to the host destination's stakeholders, given the aim of sustainable development, sport events leveraging must integrate economic, social and environmental perspectives, justifying its multidimensional extensiveness. The general objective of this study was to stimulate and understand the process of planning and implementing strategic multi-leverage of international open water swimming events hosted in Portugal, in 2022, addressing the economic, social, environmental, partners and sport dimensions. This study employed a case study approach within an action-research methodology. The research design covered three action-research stages: planning, implementation and analysis. The data collection combined nominal group sessions, field observation, document analysis and interviews. The qualitative analysis used the triangulation of the data collected, and the content analysis was performed using the NVivo software. Actions were strategically planned targeting economic, social, environmental, partners, and sport dimensions, albeit with a prominent focus on economic and sport leverage. Excluding sport, the implementation of strategic actions ensured all dimensions' operationalisation. Six constraints (e.g. little adherence from local partners) and three drivers (e.g. commitment and authority of the leverage coordinating team) conditioned the strategic leverage implementation. The strategic planning of future sport events should outline actions that intensify the destination’s image, focusing the attention of stakeholders on valuing the natural attributes. This study strengthened knowledge about the multi-leverage approach applied to two sport events, reinforcing the need to implement cross-leveraging among the aforementioned dimensions to enhance the success of strategic leverage.
- Exploring the relationship between sport demand's key players and environmental sustainability: pointers from a systematic reviewPublication . Martins, Rute; Pereira, Elsa; Rosado, António; Mascarenhas, MargaridaA systematic literature review was conducted to explore the relation between key players of the demand for sport and the environmental sustainability, within the 2013-2019 timeframe. Data were collected from four scientific databases and scrutinized by the PRISMA protocol. Quantitative systematic literature review and content analysis, supported by Nvivo 11 and EndNote X7 software, were the methodologies used for data analysis. The results provided by the 142 selected studies highlighted tourism and recreation as the most scrutinized areas by recent research on this relationship. Compared to spectators and local residents, the nature-based sport practitioners were the furthest analysed type of sport consumers. The most pursued research objective relates to the behavioural driving factors. Among the environmental action's encouraging causes, psychological factors were emphasized. Promoting the sport consumer's environmental education, along with the improvement of the environmental communication developed by the organizations integrating the sport offer, were the greatest management recommendations to induce ecological behavioural change. Future studies should focus on deepening the knowledge on the spectators' and local residents' relation with environmental sustainability, namely through the comparison of practitioners and non-practitioners, so that sport can assert itself more effectively in the implementation of environmental sustainability.
- Factors shaping spectators’ consumption patterns: controversial arisings from an international sport tourism eventPublication . Mascarenhas, Margarida; Vieira, Henrique; Martins, RutePurpose – Sport events’ contribution to the destinations’ local economy implies in-depth knowledge of the economic benefits generated by non-resident spectators (NRS). Thus, this study aims to answer: What is the profile and shaping factors of the consumption patterns of the several types of NRS in international surf tourism events? Design/methodology/approach – A total of 263 questionnaires applied to the NRS of an international surf event were collected and analysed. The identification of the NRS profile and the predictive factors of their total expenditure were performed through the correlation of factors and multiple linear regression, respectively. Findings – Mostly, the event attracted generation Y NRS, with a high level of education and regular sport practice. The results showed differences among the NRS: the ‘‘casuals’’ included more women than men; the ‘‘extensioners’’ integrated the NRS whose surfing practice is higher; the ‘‘event visitors’’/’’time switchers’’ mostly integrated the domestic tourism flows; the ‘‘casuals’’ and ‘‘extensioners’’ spent the most at the destination, and those whose intention to recommend/revisit the destination, respectively, was higher; and the shaping factor that most influenced the increase in NRS expenditure was the overnight stay, added by older age, higher education level and foreign origin. Originality/value – Regardless of the initial motivation that led to the trip to the destination, the results verified that the event’s attributes are capable of contributing to the recommendation/visitation of the destination. Consequently, the study of economic benefits (tangible and intangible) provided by sport events in destinations should be guided by an integrative analysis of NRS.
- How do spectator-to-spectator negative interactions lead to a less memorable and recommended sport tourism experience through internal attention and involvement?Publication . Martins, Rute; Monteiro, Patrícia; Campos, Ana Cláudia; Sthapit, Erose; Mascarenhas, MargaridaPurpose – On-site tourist experience co-creation enhances memorability, and the latter precedes tourists’ intention to revisit and recommend the experience/destination to others. However, tourists’ interaction is not always perceived as positive, co-destroying experience value. This study aims to examine the influence of experience value co-destruction on sport tourists’ future behavioral intentions, considering the mediating effects of internal attention, involvement and memorability. Design/methodology/approach – Data were gathered from 254 non-resident spectators at Tudor Nazare´ Tow Surfing Challenge event in Portugal. Findings – The results showed that value co-destruction during a sport tourism experience negatively influences spectators’ internal attention and involvement, which further impacts their memorability and behavioral intentions. Practical implications – Sport event managers should minimize and reverse negative sport tourists’ interactions to enhance the spectators’ attention and involvement in the experience. In addition, to boost the memorability and behavioral intentions, spectators’ involvement should be prioritized through leveraging sport culture and event-generated liminality. Originality/value – This study expanded the research lens of co-destruction of tourist experience value by integrating cognitive psychology and behavioral outcomes, validating the on-site tourist experience co-creation model to co-destruction and extending it to behavioral intentions.
- Portugal nautical stations: Strategic alliances for sport tourism and environmental sustainabilityPublication . Pereira, Elsa; Martins, Rute; Marques, João Filipe; Flores, Adão; Aghdash, Vahid; Mascarenhas, MargaridaNautical tourism is a tourist product with great development in the European space and a lot of potential to promote and develop tourist destinations. Considering the dynamics of nautical tourism management and the importance of meeting the specificities of this market niche, the objective of this study was to analyse the strategic alliances for the development of the offer of nautical tourism products, namely the strategic goals and sustainable environmental practices adopted by their actors which integrated the strategic alliances in order to certificate a plethora of nautical stations in Portugal. Between September and December 2021, 17 Portuguese nautical stations' application forms were collected. Content analysis using Nvivo software was the technique used for data analysis. The results showed a multiplicity of strategic objectives associated with the strategic alliance established between the nautical stations. The strategic vision of nautical stations for the development of strategic alliances is built, firstly, on the objective of structuring the tourism offer, followed by increasing governance and promoting and marketing nautical tourism using the image of the destination. Based on these results, it is possible to infer the importance of nautical stations in destination competitiveness and the role of strategic alliances in facilitating penetration in the nautical tourism market. The managers of nautical stations should consider the use of strategic alliances to make a cooperative marketing in order to improve the experience of the clients. Regarding environmental sustainability practices, the results exposed the prominence of environmental education actions in contrast to the reduced number of nautical stations developing actions for the adoption of sustainable transport. This study contributes to a better understanding of nautical tourism and Portuguese nautical stations, a project of strategic investment in sport and tourism, inferring on the objectives underlying the formation of strategic alliances and on the adopted environmental sustainability practices. The conclusions of this study point to the need for future scientific research on the actual operationalization of the objectives underlying the formation of strategic alliances, as well as the environmental practices developed by nautical stations.
- Sport tourism spectators’ environmental sustainability intentions in an international surfing eventPublication . Martins, Rute; Pereira, Elsa; Rosado, António; Marôco, João; Mccullough, Brian; Mascarenhas, MargaridaThe assessment of environmental strategies and practices is an essential factor in sport tourism events environmental sustainability. Thus, this investigation aimed to study spectators' environmental intentions in an international surng event using the sport sustainability campaign evaluation model (SSCEM). A questionnaire was applied to 343 spectators of the World Championship Tour at Peniche, Portugal. The data were analysed with the Structural Equation Modelling Analysis. The results conrmed the inuence of points of attachment and internal constraints on spectators' attitudes towards environmental campaign. However, attitudes towards environmental campaign did not inuence spectators' sustainability intentions. Only, external constraints and past behaviours were associated to spectators' sustainable intentions. This research added valuable knowledge on the factors inuencing the sport consumers' environmental intentions providing knowledge to sport managers to better plan future campaigns regarding the target audience. Furthermore, this investigation conrmed the SSCEM's ability to analyse the consequences of the environmental campaigns developed by the sport tourism events.
