- How do residents experience their own festivals? A qualitative approach to meanings and experiencesPublication . Brás, Nídia; Mendes, Júlio; Guerreiro, Manuela; Sequeira, BernardeteRural communities have recently been using events as tools for local development, especially if they are part of their community development policies (Richards & Palmer 2010; Ziakas & Costa 2010; Ziakas 2016). Economic benefits, feelings of belonging to the community, Urban regeneration, quality of life, and cultural and social benefits are usually recognised as the main impacts of events (Fredline, Jago, & Deery 2003; Chalip 2006; Richards & Palmer 2010; Schulenkorf & Edwards 2012; Ziakas 2016). Ziakas (2016) suggests that more research into the impacts of cultural or festival events is needed (Ziakas 2016). Moreover, de Geus, Richards and Toepoel (2016, p. 276) argue that literature ‘on event experiences is very scarce and fragmented’. There is little understanding of what kind of meanings and experiences residents attach to a festival that occurs in the place where they live. Therefore, this study aims to examine the meanings and experiences residents ascribe to a festival in a local community in a small inland region in Portugal – Mértola. Mértola is a small town with 7,274 inhabitants (Instituto Nacional de Estatística [Statistics Portugal] 2011), located in the interior of Portugal. The abundant archaeological remains from the Muslim occupation in the 11th and 12th centuries have given rise to several little museums within the town, which are one of the main tourist attractions and a source of pride for the inhabitants. Known as ‘Museum Town’, Mértola has been the stage of the Mértola Islamic Festival since 2001. The event takes place every two years and ‘seeks to evoke and preserve the heritage of the Muslim period in the south of the Iberian Peninsula’ (Câmara Municipal de Mértola 2015, p. 8). The methodology included semi-structured interviews with residents from different areas of the town and had three main objectives: (i) to understand the experiences of residents in the Islamic Festival, (ii) to understand the meanings that residents attach to the Islamic Festival and (iii) to characterise the most relevant memories of their participation in this festival. Findings of this study are likely to make significant contributions to theory and practice by furthering our understanding of how residents feel and experience the events that take place in their own cities. Also, the study highlights the often-undervalued role of residents as meaning makers and as consumers of the event.
- Key concepts in literature and tourism studiesPublication . Rodrigues Baleiro, Rita; Quinteiro, SílviaResearch on literature and tourism must depart from a distinction between this field of research and that on travel literature. Although they both focus on the act of travelling, there are fundamental differences between these two research areas. The most obvious difference is the fact that literature and tourism studies foster the analysis of a much wider set of texts than that aggregated under the classification of “travel literature”. Furthermore, unlike the travel literature research field, which has existed for a long time, literature and tourism research is recent and, as such, not many scientific studies have been conducted.
- A Flexible assessment platform for middle school, supported on students goalsPublication . Cardoso, Pedro; Lam, Roberto; Pereira, Rui Penha; Rodrigues, Nuno; Herdeiro, CláudiaRooted in many education system, assessment by written exams in a live only time evaluation is a traditional way to judge the student learnings. This live only time evaluation method leads to dys- functionalities such as high levels of stress and the assumption, by the students and by some teachers, that exams re ect the educational goals. This paper presents the Assessment Centers in Schools (ACiSs) project which aims to mitigate some of the identi ed problems. The nal goal of the ACiSs system is a web platform which allows students to have an out of class assessment system, reducing factor like stress by granting the possibility to complete more than one examination and consequent approval per module of the studied subjects. The ACiSs system is com- prised by a dataset of questions, properly categorized, which allows the automatic generation of exams wordings for summative and formative as- sessment. In the latter case, exams can be generated in order to mitigate individual weaknesses in the subject's curricular goals.
- Creative tourism dynamics: connecting travellers, communities, cultures, and placesPublication . Cabeça, Sónia Moreira; Gonçalves, Alexandra; Marques, João Filipe; Tavares, MirianThe third International Conference of the CREATOUR Project is devoted to Creative Tourism Dynamics, with a particular focus on communicating, engaging, and connecting travellers with local communities and place through creative tourism. The CREATOUR approach to Creative Tourism highlights four elements: active participation, the learning and creation process, creative self-expression, and a link to the local community and sense of place. Creative Tourism creates a privileged relationship between tourists and residents, which derives from the immersion of both in local culture through the active participation in creative learning experiences. In this context, it is important to better understand how to identify and reach travellers, how to involve communities in the design and production of creative experiences, and to learn from initiatives being developed internationally.
- Organizational factors affecting knowledge sharing capabilities: a study with portuguese health professionalsPublication . Almeida, Helena; Ramos, Alejandro; Sousa, Maria José; Santos, Carina Martinho; Fontes, Ana PaulaThe importance of knowledge management in the healthcare sector has been highlighted in an attempt to expand the speed of new digital technologies to establish external collaboration, employee engagement, networking, and customer service, providing at the same time new challenges for the overall education system. Kim and Lee’s empirical study, supported on Davenport and Prusak's framework, evaluated to what extent i) organizational culture (ii) organizational structure, (iii) application of information technology, influence sharing knowledge capabilities in public organizations in South Korea. The goal is to validate Kim and Lee's instrument, trying to replicate the theoretical model suggested by them but not fully validated, with 203 health professionals from the Algarve region (southern Portugal). The data were submitted to an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with (STATA), in order to meet a criterion-related validity. Results show the effect of "cultural organizational" through the facets "visions and objectives," "trust," and "social networks" on KSC. The variables “organizational structure” and “information technology” provided no statistical support because they were not significantly associated with employee's knowledge-sharing capabilities. Small 7 sample size and perceptual measures are only some of several limitations. Future studies must prepare a systematic literature review and use the results of this first study in order to find out a valid model.
- Creative Tourism: the creatour recipe bookPublication . Gonçalves, Alexandra; Marques, João Filipe; Tavares, Mirian; Cabeça, Sónia MoreiraHow do you catalyse and develop a creative tourism ‘sector’ in non-metropolitan contexts? This is rarely addressed in the creative tourism literature – there are still many gaps in our knowledge about creative tourism development, its evolutionary dynamics, and strategies for sustainable approaches. With this as its context, the CREATOUR project brought together teams in five research centres1 and 40 pilot organizations2 to promote, learn, and develop a variety of place-specific, small-scale creative tourism initiatives throughout the Norte, Centro, Alentejo, and Algarve regions of Portugal. Launched in November 2016, CREATOUR: Creative Tourism Destination Development in Small Cities and Rural Areas (www.creatour.pt) is a national, 3.5-year, research-and application project to develop and pilot an integrated approach for creative tourism in small cities and rural areas in Portugal.3 The project interlinks interdisciplinar social science research with entrepreneurial and community-engaged practices in creative tourism. On the research side, the project aims to examine and reflect on the creative tourism activities, including development dynamics and patterns, reception experiences, and community impacts, using methodologies and theoretical perspectives from the fields of tourism, culture, and local/ regional development. On the practice side, it aims to catalyse creative tourism offers in small cities and rural areas in Portugal, inform and learn from their development, and link them with each other through the development of a national network. This network-in-formation offers not only visibility through critical mass, but also support through research, co-learning, and capacity building. The project also aims to inform policy development relating to creative tourism. The CREATOUR project considers creative tourism as a bridge between culture and tourism and as a strategic area for mobilizing endogenous cultural resources for local sustainable development – with initiatives that are envisioned, designed, and embedded locally … and connected nationally
- Creative Tourism Dynamics: Connecting Travellers, Communities, Cultures and PlacesPublication . Cabeça, Sónia Moreira; Gonçalves, Alexandra Rodrigues; Marques, João Filipe; Tavares, MirianCreative tourism has established itself as a sustainable alternative to mass tourism, in which the endogenous resources of each destination are particularly relevant. This type of tourism is increasingly positioning itself as an instrument to generate competitiveness, valorise heritage and promote sustainable practices, bringing income to small destinations and supporting communities. In recent years, the concept has been firmly established: the research on the subject increases and more articles are being published. Creative tourism is further implemented and amplifies its meaning and the ways in which it materialises. In short, it can be defined as a type of tourism that offers a genuine experience combining local culture immersion with learning and co-creation processes. Portugal was a pioneer in its innovative approach to creative tourism. Since 2016, a multidisciplinary team has been working in the development of an integrated approach and research agenda for creative tourism in small cities and rural areas in Portugal. CREATOUR: Creative Tourism Destination Development in Small Cities and Rural Areas supports collaborative research processes, combining theory and experimentation and aims to foster and enhance tourism offers building from local strengths, knowledge, skills, traditions and developing a sustainable creative tourism that is socially, culturally, environmentally and economically territorialized.
