- Assessment of recreational and tourist cycling routes. case study in the west region of PortugalPublication . Carvalhinho, Luís; Pereira, Elsa; Durão, Rosana Corga Fernandes; Rosa, PauloRecreational and tourist cycling routes in Portugal, namely in the west coast region, have been growing sharply in recent years. This trend can be generalized throughout the country, considering the importance of the strategy outlined by the Portuguese Cycling Federation, to reach more people, to offer better practice conditions, and contributing to the sustainability of the regions. In order to ensure a quality offer in terms of cycling related products, 13 routes were assessed in the territory of Caldas da Rainha municipality, as part of its Cycling Center project. An innovative methodological approach was used based on the regulations for the approval of Portuguese cycling routes, which involved different stakeholders, focus group, data triangulation, with different points of assessment, techniques and emerging technological instruments, facilitating greater depth in data collection. The results allowed for the assessment of a balanced distribution of routes and existing resources, in terms of technical difficulty, level of physical effort and touristic and landscape interest. The quality of conditions for sports and recreation can contribute to the promotion of active lifestyles, safety, comfort, the attraction of tourists and the promotion of the heritage and sustainability of the territory. Management implications: • Cycling Routes can contribute to the deseasonalisation of outdoor-based tourism demand. • The participation of stakeholders (e.g. cyclists, clubs, companies, municipality) can contribute to the development of a cycling tourism destination. • Planners should identify the specific needs of this segment to design and manage the offer. • Specialized services are needed to support recreational cycling and tourism. • Cycling tourism products should value the points of interest of the territory, and the satisfaction of cyclists, also considering, the level of difficulty of each route • The cycling industry can help improve destination positioning. • Climate, safety and the quality of natural resources are key to enhancing a cycling tourism destination.
- Immunological resilience of a temperate catshark to a simulated marine heatwavePublication . Martins Rebocho, Sandra; Ferreira, Cristina; Mateus, Ana Patrícia; Santos, Catarina Pereira; Fonseca, Joana; Rosa, Rui; Power, Deborah MaryMarine heatwaves (MHWs) have recently been proposed to be more relevant in driving population changes than the continuous increase in average temperatures associated with climate change. The causal processes underpinning MHW effects in sharks are unclear but may be linked to changes in fitness caused by physiological trade-offs that influence the immune response. Considering the scarcity of data about the immune response of sharks under anomalous warming events, the present study analyzed several fitness indices and characterized the immune response (in the blood, epigonal organ, liver, spleen and intestine) of temperate adult small-spotted catsharks (Scyliorhinus canicula) after a 30 day exposure to a category II MHW. The results indicated that adult small-spotted catsharks have developed coping strategies for MHWs. Specifically, among the 35 parameters investigated, only the gonad-to-body ratio (GBR) and plasma glucose concentration showed significant increases. In contrast, gene expression of igm and tumor necrosis factor receptor (tnfr) in blood cells, and tnfr in the epigonal organ, as well as the number of monocytes, all significantly decreased. Although a decline in immune function in small-spotted catsharks was revealed following MHW exposure, energy mobilization restored homeostasis and indicated a shift in energy allocation towards reproduction. Group resilience may be due to the variable tolerance of individuals, the phenotypic plasticity of cellular immunity, thermal imprinting and/or metabolic capacity of the individuals.
- Morcegos: Um fascínio biológico para os alunos do Ensino BásicoPublication . Pereira, Mónica de Sousa; Coelho, Ana Cristina Hurtado MatosO presente relatório investigativo foi elaborado no âmbito da unidade curricular da Prática de Ensino Supervisionada do mestrado em Ensino do 1.º CEB e de Matemática e Ciências Naturais no 2.º CEB. Neste estudo participaram 20 estudantes do 6.º ano do 2.º CEB, de uma escola do concelho de Loulé. A temática abordada foram os morcegos em várias vertentes (sentimentos por parte do(a)s estudantes, classificação, anatomia, ecologia, doenças e mitos). Tratou-se de uma investigação qualitativa de cariz interpretativo, com observação participante, que decorreu durante o 2.º semestre do ano letivo 2021/2022. Adotou-se o questionário, registos áudio e fotográficos das aulas, observação direta, notas de campo, registos e desenhos dos participantes como técnicas de recolha de dados. A partir do questionário percebeu-se que uma percentagem substancial dos participantes nutria interesse e simpatia pelos morcegos, considerando-os engraçados, bonitos e até mesmo admiráveis. Após levantamento das ideias prévias do(a)s participantes, os mesmos puderam explorar e descobrir as principais características dos morcegos, bem como a sua importância ecológica, através de uma sessão de esclarecimento dinamizada por uma bióloga especializada na área dos morcegos e da realização de atividades integradas num Kit. Este Kit consiste num recurso de intervenção didática original e foi usado para construção de conhecimento associado aos morcegos. Integra um guião das atividades a realizar que incluem a conceção de um livro de bolso dedicado aos morcegos e a construção de um modelo de um morcego em 3D. Durante a intervenção didática verificou-se que o(a)s discentes tinham algumas ideias válidas sobre o animal em questão, apesar de não possuírem muitos conhecimentos sobre o morcego no âmbito das ciências naturais. A turma revelou que os conhecimentos que possuíam acerca dos morcegos estavam mais relacionados com mitos e crenças do que com factos relacionados com a biologia e a ecologia destes animais. Após a intervenção didática, observou-se alteração das perceções iniciais do(a)s estudantes, confirmando-se a eficácia das abordagens pedagógicas adotadas, baseadas na realização de tarefas, dinamizadas pelo(a)s estudantes. Atividades como a construção de modelos anatómicos, a criação de arte inspirada em morcegos e o uso de tecnologias na pesquisa de informação reforçaram o conhecimento científico e incentivaram o pensamento crítico e a inovação.
- Sport tourism spectators’ environmental sustainability intentions in an international surfing eventPublication . Martins, Rute; Pereira, Elsa; Rosado, António; Marôco, João; Mccullough, Brian; Mascarenhas, MargaridaThe assessment of environmental strategies and practices is an essential factor in sport tourism events environmental sustainability. Thus, this investigation aimed to study spectators' environmental intentions in an international surng event using the sport sustainability campaign evaluation model (SSCEM). A questionnaire was applied to 343 spectators of the World Championship Tour at Peniche, Portugal. The data were analysed with the Structural Equation Modelling Analysis. The results conrmed the inuence of points of attachment and internal constraints on spectators' attitudes towards environmental campaign. However, attitudes towards environmental campaign did not inuence spectators' sustainability intentions. Only, external constraints and past behaviours were associated to spectators' sustainable intentions. This research added valuable knowledge on the factors inuencing the sport consumers' environmental intentions providing knowledge to sport managers to better plan future campaigns regarding the target audience. Furthermore, this investigation conrmed the SSCEM's ability to analyse the consequences of the environmental campaigns developed by the sport tourism events.
