Abstract(s)
This document describes the professional experience gained during my internship at PROAP, a landscape architecture studio based in Lisbon. The internship was combined with research into landscape architecture designing in terms of two fundamental aspects: the site of the intervention and the person responsible for the intervention. The state of the art was explored from an integrative perspective regarding the natural and cultural aspects characteristic of the Place, in which the landscape architects, and all the other organizers of the space who work alongside him. They are seen primarily as interpreters of the space of intervention, responsible for understanding it and adapting a specific design approach that guarantees the conservation of its character during the process of spatial construction. The essential terms and concepts within the scope of this approach were also analyzed and explained, as were some methods of analyzing and transforming the space. Based on the consolidated concepts and terms, the aim was to have PROAP's work, values and mode of operation analyzed and evaluated in the terms explored. Once I was part of the team at the studio, the access to information and the possibility of observation helped to build this reflection, with the additional value of being able to combine the analysis of projects that had already been built with those in which I had participated. It also includes a description of the work developed during the internship and the experience gained. The internship experience at PROAP proved to be highly rewarding in terms of consolidating theoretical, technical, and conceptual knowledge. In conclusion, landscape architects have an important role as interpreters and agents of landscape transformation, in the creation of meaningful places that can last, serving the needs of society and contributing to the preservation of the identity of places.
