Abstract(s)
This study focuses on social representations in the field of education, specifically schools in Guinea-Bissau, with a case study on the Liceu Regional Hô Chi Minh/Canchungo, carried out as part of the master’s programme in School Management and Administration at the School of Education and Communication at the University of the Algarve. The theoretical framework of the study emphasises the concepts of social representation with an impact on the educational context, the educational community, particularly teachers, students, non-teaching staff and parents or guardians. It also emphasises the particularity of the political or party-political appointment of the headmaster and the rest of the management team of each high school, as a result of the country's election results. The specific objectives of the research are to get to know the representations of teachers and students at the high school under study, taking on four dimensions: school as a physical space, as school management, as an educational process and as social mobility. Through interviews with teachers and students, the aim was to investigate their social representations in the context of the Guinean reality and the high school, using a qualitative methodology in the interpretative paradigm. The respondents were questioned using a structured interview with open questions, answered in writing and orally by telephone. After analysing the data, it was concluded that the Liceu Regional Hô Chi Minh/Canchungo has several weaknesses in terms of its buildings, management and educational process. However, the overall image of the participants in the study is positive and the teachers and students recognise some measures that could foster a renewal of the teaching and learning process.
