Abstract(s)
A presente dissertação aborda a problemática da sustentabilidade e do desenvolvimento
sustentável nas Instituições do Ensino Superior. O caso em estudo foi a Universidade
do Algarve.
Uma revisão sistemática da literatura permitiu aferir os principais conceitos ligados
à sustentabilidade e ao desenvolvimento sustentável e definir os objetivos que iriam
presidir à realização do estudo. Assim, os objetivos gerais da investigação foram conhecer,
por um lado, as práticas que a UAlg está a promover em prol da sua sustentabilidade
e, por outro, a perceção dos seus stakeholders relativamente às questões relacionados com
a sustentabilidade e com o desenvolvimento sustentável. A definição dos objetivos permitiu
formular as duas perguntas às quais se pretendia que a investigação empírica desse
resposta.
A metodologia da investigação empírica desenvolveu-se em duas etapas. A primeira
inscreveu-se numa abordagem de natureza qualitativa e pretendeu responder à primeira
pergunta da investigação que tinha como objetivo conhecer o estado atual de implementação
de práticas que promovem a sustentabilidade da UAlg. Para tal, recorreu-se
à análise documental da informação existente na UAlg relacionada com a temática em
estudo. A informação recolhida foi tratada com recurso a análise de conteúdo. A segunda
etapa, em que foi utilizada uma abordagem de natureza quantitativa, teve como finalidade
dar resposta à segunda pergunta da investigação, a qual pretendia conhecer a perceção
dos stakeholders da UAlg relativamente às questões do desenvolvimento sustentável e da
sustentabilidade na instituição, tendo-se procedido à implementação de um inquérito por
questionário.
Os resultados obtidos permitiram apurar que a UAlg implementa práticas nas várias
dimensões da sustentabilidade: ambiental; económica; social e cultural; e institucional,
educacional e política. É nesta última dimensão que as práticas sustentáveis apresentam
maior ênfase, enquanto no que respeita à dimensão económica não existe informação
suficiente para a temática da sustentabilidade. Também foi possível constatar alguma falta
de conhecimento, por parte da comunidade académica, relativamente ao tema em estudo,
pelo que se sugere que a Universidade do Algarve promova a divulgação de informação
sobre Sustentabilidade e Desenvolvimento Sustentável.
This thesis addresses the sustainability and development sustainability issues in University Institutions. The case study was the University of the Algarve. A systematic review of the literature was performed to identify the main concepts related to sustainability and sustainable development, and to define the objectives that would preside over the conduct of the study. Thus, the main objectives of the research were to know, on one hand, the practices that UAlg is promoting for its sustainability and, on the other hand, the perception of its stakeholders regarding issues related to sustainability and sustainable development. The definition of the objectives made it possible to formulate two questions to which the empirical investigation was intended to provide an answer. The empirical research methodology was developed in two stages. The first part was made of a qualitative nature approach and intended to answer the first question of the investigation: to know the current state of implementation of practices that promote the sustainability of UAlg. To this end, it was made a document analysis of the information available in the UAlg, concerning these issues. The information collected was treated using content analysis. The second stage, in which a quantitative approach was used, aimed to answer the second research question, which settled on understanding the perception of UAlg stakeholders regarding the issues of sustainable development and sustainability in the institution, having carried out a questionnaire survey. The results obtained allowed us to determine that UAlg implements practices in the various dimensions of sustainability: environmental; economic; social and cultural; and institutional, educational and political. It is in this last dimension that sustainable practices have the greatest emphasis, while regarding the economic dimension, there is not enough information on the theme of sustainability. It was also possible to observe some lack of knowledge, on the part of the academic community, regarding the topic under study, which is why it is suggested that the University of Algarve promotes the dissemination of information on Sustainability and Sustainable Development.
