Abstract(s)
Estas mudanças têm imposto novos desafios implicando novas abordagens no campo do
We currently live in a media-oriented and globalized society, where a new child emerges. This child lives and breathes in a space where the media are ever-present. The use of the media by children implies profound changes in the construction of their personality, in their interplay with the others and the world. These changes have put forward new challenges which imply new approaches in the field of the process of teaching-leaming, with the emergence of a media pedagogy and the bringing of educational communication to a growingly higher level of importance in the field of proficiency ofteaching and the building ofnew competences and literacies. This study took place in 2005 in a school on the coast of East Algarve, in the town of Tavira. Children in the Sm grade (Preparatory School), aged 10-12, were the subject of this study. In the course of this investigation we tried to understand to what degree children in this age group are trading television for the use of other media (computer, internet, mobile phone, videogames, video and DVD).
