Abstract(s)

The research method used in this study was used in a qualitative and descriptive way. The study took place in Silves county, in the parish of São Bartolomeu de Messines in Algarve, with focus on Casa do Povo, which is an institution that supports people with disabilities. Before choosing the study zone, a diagnosis was made of data on the number of people with disabilities in the county and the existing social responses, through nine semi-structured interviews with those responsible for social intervention in the five parishes of the county. Analyzing this data, the parish of São Bartolomeu de Messines was the one that has a more detailed survey, knowing the approximate number of disabled people (50) and also was the one with an intervention plan to minimize the difficulties that they reveal, where the project “Sorrir M”, coordinated by the Casa do Povo institution was the featured response to these people. After delimitation of the study zone, the data were collected through the semi-structured interview technique applied individually to seven users of the Institution, four families and three technicians of the "Sorrir M" project. The results of the data collected reveal a great difficulty to these people, in their integration not only in society but also educationally and professionally. For people with IDD (Intellectual Development Disorder) the inclusion, since they finish compulsory education is a difficult goal.
