  • Spheritivity, a hybrid immersive VR Art collection
    Publication . Olivero, Lucas Fabian
Spheritivity is a collection of handmade immersive art exploring the influence of hybrid (physical/digital) perspective artworks for boosting artists’ creativity. Spheritivity exposes applications of Hybrid Immersive Art and the wide range of possibilities that perspective (as knowledge) can offer to artists, from the mastering of geometries in space up to the creation of digital environments using the latest advancements in the field of graphic representation: spherical perspectives. Furthermore, Spheritivity is enhanced with visual paradoxes (intellectual component) and Spheri (interactive component). The visual paradoxes are Escher-like visual games, such as never-ending stairs, non-orientable surfaces, etc., which Spheritivity upgrade to a never-ending canvas (via digital technology) and considering all vanishing points around the observer (via spherical perspectives). In turn, the installation Spheri uses body tracking via the machine learning library MediaPipe, and it provides Spheritivity with an interactive framework for visitors and artists to discover the potential and applications of VR environments created from spherical perspectives.
  • Understanding the slow and inevitable evolution of Early Childhood Education: Analysis of the discourse on early childhood education in Portuguese Estado Novo (1933-1974)
Publication . Vilhena, Carla; Ferreira, António Gomes; Mota, Luís Carlos Martins d’Almeida
This study aims to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the development of Early Childhood Education in Portugal during the Estado Novo (1933 to 1974), a conservative, nationalist, and authoritarian political regime. Employing a critical discourse analysis approach, the research investigates the various perspectives, justifications and oppositions invoked for the establishment, or rejection, of early childhood education and explores prevalent ideas about children’s education. Data is sourced from Portuguese pedagogical press, covering the Estado Novo period. The findings of this study shed light on the transformation of discourses surrounding early childhood education in the Portuguese Estado Novo. The period between 1933 and 1944 was characterized by a medical-hygienist focus on welfare; however, in the postWorld War II the discourse shifted towards a psychopedagogical emphasis on education (1945-1974). As for the pedagogical methods, the Montessori method emerged as the most favoured pedagogical approach for young children throughout the Estado Novo era. Keywords: Discourse analysis; early childhood education; preschool education; pedagogical press; Portugal.
  • Living with a Veteran with trauma: impact on family functioning using the genogram as a research tool
Publication . Brites, Rute; Nunes, Odete; Hipólito, João; Brandão, Tânia; Correia, António; Nunes, Cristina
Introduction: Although the psychological impact of war on veterans, particularly the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), has been well documented, the long-term effects on their families have been less widely studied. Research suggests that veterans’ trauma can disrupt relationships and contribute to secondary/intergenerational trauma within the family. Objective: This study uses genograms to explore how PTSD symptoms experienced by veterans have influenced family relationships over time, and to uncover patterns of intergenerational and systemic impact in families of Portuguese Overseas War veterans. Method: A qualitative approach involving semi-structured interviews with 32 families (each comprising a veteran, their spouse, and at least one adult child) was used (n =100). The data were synthesized into genograms to visually map family structure, relationship quality, and patterns of psychological distress. Cross-family analysis was then conducted to identify common relational themes. Results: Families were clustered into four main impact groups: maximum negative impact, limited negative impact, no impact, and protective impact. These classifications reflect variations in family functioning, mental health symptoms, and relational patterns. In some families, the veteran’s trauma appeared to affect multiple subsystems, while in others, spouses played a buffering/protective role. A fifth group was identified, with no consistent pattern. Conclusion: Findings emphasize the complexity and variability of trauma transmission within families, highlighting both vulnerability and resilience. Using genograms proved effective in capturing systemic dynamics. These results emphasize the importance of adopting a family-systems approach in the clinical treatment of veterans affected by PTSD and suggest avenues for future research.

  • Multilingual realities and language policy
    Publication . Conceição, Manuel Célio
The growing complexity of linguistic environments in the twenty-first century reflects global processes such as urbanisation, migration, political transformation and educational reform. In an increasingly interconnected and linguistically diverse world, language functions not merely as a tool for communication but as a complex and contested site of identity, governance and global participation; language has become both a mirror and a driver of change.
  • Catalyzing success: how enthusiastic leaders drive performance through group satisfaction and positive emotions
Publication . Gonçalves, Gabriela; Sousa, Cátia; Veras, Catarina; Vieira dos Santos, Joana
Effective leaders employ a blend of transformational and transactional leadership styles to collaborate with their employees, working towards achieving organizational objectives. While the significance of enthusiasm in leadership is acknowledged, its specific role remains largely unexplored within the realm of leadership studies. We contend that enthusiasm assumes a pivotal and influential role in successful leadership, ultimately enhancing overall productivity. This study is dedicated to investigating how leader enthusiasm impacts perceived performance among team members and examine the mediation of group satisfaction and positive emotions in the relationship between leader enthusiasm and perceived performance. By analyzing data collected from a participant pool of 311 individuals, our research yields compelling evidence that leader enthusiasm exerts a positive influence on perceived performance. A noteworthy revelation emerging from our research is found in the mediation analysis. This analysis sheds light on the pivotal roles of group satisfaction and positive emotions as key mediators in the link between leader enthusiasm and perceived performance. This underscores the concept that leader enthusiasm indirectly shapes how employees perceive their own performance, primarily through its profound impact on group satisfaction and the positive emotions experienced by individual team members. In summary, our study underscores the vital and transformative role of leader enthusiasm in cultivating a rewarding and fulfilling work environment. This, in turn, exerts a positive influence on follower emotions and their perceptions of performance. Our findings shed light on the intricate mechanisms through which leader enthusiasm contributes to shaping employees’ perceptions of their performance.
  • Unlocking the potential of other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) for achieving conservation targets: a global scoping review
Publication . Petza, Dimitra; Amorim, Eva; Lamine, Emna Ben; Colloca, Francesco; Domínguez Crisóstomo, Esther; Fabbrizzi, Erika; Fraschetti, Simonetta; Galparsoro, Ibon; Giakoumi, Sylvaine; Kruse, Maren; Stelzenmüller, Vanessa; Katsanevakis, Stelios
Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), introduced by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), refer to areas outside formal protected-area networks that deliver effective and enduring in situ biodiversity conservation. This scoping review systematically examined global approaches to identifying and evaluating potential OECMs. Analysing 99 studies covering 694 case studies and 237 000 potential sites, we found that potential OECMs are widespread, particularly in Asia and terrestrial environments, with most initiatives led by the environmental sector. Assessments relied largely on qualitative expert knowledge, with limited application of analytical methods. Although CBD criteria were commonly applied, contributions of related to ecosystem services and socio-cultural values were often overlooked. Effectiveness evaluations showed considerable uncertainty, with over one-third of case studies reporting inadequate evidence of conservation outcomes. The review emphasises the need for standardised assessment methodologies, improved decision-support tools, and socio-cultural integration to enhance OECM recognition, particularly under the 30 × 30 conservation biodiversity target.
